Lincoln Elected
Lincoln was elected as the 16th President. This was good because he wanted to remove slavery. -
Battle of Fort Sumpter
When Confederates bombarded the fort for about a day. Ended on the 13th. This was the main start of the Civil War. -
Lincoln Orders Blockade of the South
The North attempted to cut off all the Southern ports. This would cut off the South and would weaken them for the rest of the war if it worked. -
First Battle of Bull Run
It was the first major land battle of the Civil War. Many lives were lost and it was won by the South. -
Monitor vs. Virginia Naval Battle
First Ironclad battle. This was MAJOR because it would take a lot more to sink a boat now that they were metal. -
Battle of Shiloh
One of the bloodiest battles of the war, lots and lots of violence. It showed that both sides were ready to fight and would fight to the death. -
7 Days Campaign
6 battles over 7 days in Virginia. Won by the South, on of there several early victories. -
Battle of Antietam
Bloodiest and worst one day battle in U.S. History. Over 23,000 deaths on both sides. Weakened both sides greatly. -
Emancipation Proclamation Issued
It was issued to free slaves but didnt take effect until later. It helped becase the South wouldn't be able to use slaves as troops. -
Second Battle of Bull Run
Offensive battle by the Confederates. Showed that they would attack even though they didn't have as many supplies as the North. -
Emancipation Proclamation into effect
It was put into effect and the slaves were freed in the mostly Union controled states. -
Battle of Chancellorsville
Described as Lee's Perfect Battle because he split his smaller army in half and attacked at two places and over powered the North. It showed that the South was capable of using their smaller size to their advantage. -
Battle of Gettysburg
Had the most deaths in any battle of the Civil War. Also it was the turning point for the North during the war. This was KEY for the North because they hadn't pulled out many major victories yet... until now. -
Siege of Vicksburg
Last major battle of the Vicksburg capaign. Union again won and the momentume was shifting to the North. -
Ulysses Takes over Union Army
Did not give specific day so I put a random one in the correct month* After major victories under Grant, Lincoln put him in charge of the whole army. This was great because he had battle experience. -
Gettysburg Address
Lincoln gave one of the most famous speeches in American History. It is still remembered today and it lit a fire in the North and they fought harder. -
Battle of Chattanooga
A series of battles in Tennessee where Grant was in charge. -
Atlanta Falls
Sherman and his troops capture Atlanta, it is the beginning of the end for the Confederates. The North can see this and they keep attacking and burning the Confederate supplies. -
Lincoln re-election
Lincoln got elected for the second time and won 55% of the votes over McClellan.The North was excited because Lincoln was going to end this war. -
March to the Sea
Sherman started his campaign to the sea across Georgia. (After capturing Atlanta) They keep taking land from the South which is good. -
Savannah Falls to the Union
Sherman captures the port in Savannah, Georgia. It is a major accomplishment because it is like the heart of the South. -
13th Amendment Passed
Outlawed having slaves all over the country and you could be arrested for having them. -
Richmond is Captured by Union
The Union moved in and took over the Confederate Capitol. Basically the war is over and both sides know it. -
Confederates Surrender
Robert E. Lee Surrenders to the Union and the war is offically over. -
Lincoln Assassination
Lincoln was shot and killed by John Wilkes Booth in the theatere performance. This was major because there might still be pockets of Confederates that could plan more attacks like this.
