Abraham Lincoln was elected as the 16th president of the United States -
Howell Cobb Resigns
Confronted with president Lincoln's election, Howell Cobb resigns as Secretary of Treasury then strongly encouraged the secession of Georgia. -
South Carolina Seceeds
South Carolina suceeds from the Union. They are the first state to seceed so far. -
Confederacy Formed
The Confederacy Constitution is adopted after 5 more states join the Confederacy (Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, & Texas) -
Jefferson Davis Elected Confederate President
Jefferson Davis is elected president to the Confederate States of America. -
Lincoln's Inauguration
President Lincoln is inaugurated as president of the United States. -
Fort Sumter
Shots are fired at Fort Sumter. They surrender on April 13th causing the Civil War begins. -
Bull Run
First major battle of the Civil War. Also known as the First Manassas to Confederate states. -
McClellan's Dismissal
Fustrated with the inactivity of George McClellan, President Lincoln fires him from supreme command. -
Battle of Shiloh
Confederate forces attack the Union under Ulyses S. Grant at Shiloh, Tennessee and win. Casualities were heavy with 13,000 Union deaths and 11,000 Confederate deaths. -
Seven Days Battle
Confederate forces fight a number of battles including Mechanicsville, Gaines's Mill, Savage's Station, Frayser's Farm, and Malvern Hill. They withdrew to Richmond on July 2nd. -

Battle of Antietam
Was the bloodiest battle of war with 2,108 Union soldiers killed and 9,549 wounded, 2,700 Confederates killed and 9,029 wounded. No clear winner, but the victory is considered to be for the Union. -
Emancipation Proclamation
Order issued by Abraham Lincoln which freed slaves in all regions which rebelled against the Union. -
Conscription Act
An act which declared any man between the age of 20 and 45 was elligable for drafting in the army. -
Battle of Chancellorsville
General Hooker attacked General Lee's forces but surprised the Union by splitting up and attacking in three different locations and defeating them. -
Battle of Vicksburg
Serious of battles won by Union under general Ulysess S. Grant. -
Ghettysburg
Battle with the largest casualities and considered to be the turning point of the American Civil War. Union won however with the amout of casualites it seemed as though they did not. Leads Lincoln to deliver his Ghettysburg Address. -
Ulysses S. Grant Is Promoted
U.S. Grant is put in control of all US army forces. -
Wilderness Campaign
Ulysesses S. Grant wishes to attack Robert E. Lee's forces in Virginia until they were completely destroyed. Lee's forces caused more casualites however did not have replacements unlike Grant. -
Attack of Petersburg
After Robert E. Lee's forces began to attack, Grant begins his siege at Petersburg, Virginia in order to defend the city. -
Fall of Atlanta
Atlanta is captured under General Sherman's command. This is a huge victory for the Union. -
Lincoln is Reelected
Lincoln is reelected as president of the United States. This causes much more tension and anger in the Southern states. -
Negro Enlistment
The Confederacy allows for the enlistment of black soldiers. Although the Confederacy never stated these soldiers would be free, it was implied. -
Battle of Five Forks
Grant breaks Lee's forces at Petersburg causing the Confederacy to retreat westward and abandon the city. -
Lee Surrenders
Lee officially surrenders to Grant at Appomattox Court House, Virginia. This ultimately ends the war. -
Lincoln's Assasination
President Lincoln is assasinated by John Wilkes Booth at Ford's theater during a performance of "Our American Cousin." this put the northern states in a great sense of fear and grief despite the criticism Lincoln was given prior. -
Capture of Jefferson Davis
President of the Confederacy, Jefferson Davis, is captured. President Andrew Johnson states the South has officially ceased armed fighting.
