    In December of 1849, the 31st congress were talking about the border dispute, where Texas claimed the east half of the New Mexico territory where slavery was still a issue. As things stood, the south's session was going to happen. But Henry Clay came to save the day and proposed a compromise that the north and south could accept. The compromise was that Caifornia will be a free state and a more effective fugitive slave law, and the people of new Mexico and Utah to vote for or against slavery

    On Nov. 6 1860, Abraham Lincoln was elected president without any electoral votes from the south. Although he said he was going to stop the spread of slavery, but he wasn't going to mess with the south yet southerners still didn't like him.

    After Lincolns victory in the election the south thought that slavery might be in trouble. South Carolina led the way by seceding in Dec. 20, 1860. Mississippi was next, then Florida, then Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas. They formed the Confederate States of America and elected Jefferson Davis as the president.

    on Jan 1, 1863 Abraham Lincoln issued the emancipation proclamation. A document that freed all the slaves in the confederacy. Lincoln had just made the war about slavery, stopping foreign help from reaching the confederacy.
