The South Forms a Government
The slave states formed a government of their own when they were unhappy with the one Lincoln was running. It was shortly after the union rejected succession when they decided to rebel. The south consisted of the slave states, the slave states believed that slaves were the life of their business. With out slaves they couldn't survive, well look at us today. -
The 1st Battle of Bull Run
This was the first battle between the union and confederate armies. The Union had an army of 35,000 that struck the Confederate army that only had 20,000 troops. The confederate broke the unions right flank which gave them a chance against the Union. -
Battle of Ironclads
This was a Confederate defeat. It began by the Confederate’s new ironclad addition causing the union to create its own ironclad. The battle ended in a draw at first. But later the confederate blew up its vessels so it did not fall in to union’s hands. -
Battle of Shiloh
This was an early battle of the civil war. The Confederates attacked the union with the element of surprise. The union won because the confederate had to pull back. -
The 2nd Battle of Bull Run
This took place in Virginia, 62,000 union soldiers vs 50,000 Confederate. Once again the Confederate won with the help of their General Robert Lee and the Union led by General John Pope Lee. -
The Battle of Fredricksburg
Took place in 1862, involved the largest amount of soldiers in any war in all of history. This was a huge defeat for the Union. However this battle also restored Confederate morale after their unsuccessful campaign. -
Emancipation Proclamation
Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. It stated some strategic implications for the ongoing civil war. This have the union an advantage against the Confederate States. -
Gettysburg Battle
This was the ultimate victory of north over south. However, this battle was not the reason why the civil war ended. The confederate had about 75,000 men and union about 97,000. -
Surrender at Appomatox Courthouse
This surrender by the Confederate brought an end to the bloody war after 4 years. The union surrounded the Confederate leaving them no other option but to surrender. About 6,000 prisoners were taken by the Union.
