  • Fort Sumter

    The Confederacy won easily.
    This was the first battle of the war. It encouraged a lot of Northerners to join the army.
  • Bull Run

    Manassas, Western Virginia
    Confederacy won after a difficult battle.
    Northern troops werre inexperienced and at a moment of confusion the South led a counterattack and won the battle.
  • Shiloh

    Shiloh
    Near Shiloh in Southwestern Tennessee
    It was difficult for the Confederacy to win.
    This was the bloodiest battle in the war so far and marked the beginning of "total war" for both sides as well as the end of Southern control of the Mississipi Valley since the Union won.
  • Shenandoah

    Shenandoah Valley
    Confederacy easily won.
    This battle kept the Union's attention away from the Confederate capital, Richmond, and also resulted in the capture of 2,000 Union prisoners and 10,000 rifles in the Confederate cause.
  • Antietam

    Antietam Creek, near Sharpsburg, Maryland
    The Union won the battle easily.
    Despite winning a strategic victory, the Union army once again gave up the chance to finish the Confederate army by letting them retreat and get away.
  • Gettysburg

    Gettysburg, Pennsylvania
    Difficult for the Union to win.
    This battle was seen as a turning point in the war and the begginning of the end of the South.
  • Vicksburg

    Jackson, Champion's Hill, Black River, and Vicksburg, Mississipi
    Difficult for the Union to win.
    This was a major victory for the Union since they had no supplies and their victory also meant that Mississipi now belonged to the Union.
  • Fort Wagner

    Fort Wagner on Charleston Harbor
    Confederacy easily won.
    The battle caused the North to realise that they needed the help of African-Americans to win and to support abolitionists.
