Democratic Party convention in Charleston
When the pro-slavery platform is rejected, delegates from 8 southern states leave. The remaining delegates adjourn after being unable to agree on a candidate. -
Whig Party meets in Baltimore
Former members of the American and Whig parties meet in Baltimore, MD, to form the Constitutional Union party. Delegates nominate John Bell of Tennessee for president and Edward Everett of Massachusetts for vice-president. -
Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln is elected as the 16th President. He became the first Republican to win the presidency. -
Manifesto Issued
Seven senators and 23 representatives from the southern states issue a manifesto urging secession and the organization of a Southern Confederacy. -
South Caroline secedes
South Carolina becomes the first state to declare its secession. This later led to the formation of the Confederacy -

Battle of Bull Run
First of 3 battle in Manassas, Virginia. Won by the Confederates, this was one of the first major land battles of the Civil War. -
Mclellan loses command.
President Lincoln -- impatient with General McClellan's inactivity -- issued an order reorganizing the Army of Virginia and relieving McClellan of supreme command for having the "slows". -
Battle of Shiloh
Also known as the Battle of Pittsburg Landing. One of the early engagements of the Civil War. Won by the Union -

The Siege of Petersburg
The Petersburg Campaign gave the photographers full opportunity to build a documentation. Grant won by steadily extending his lines westward, but the photographers do not seem to have ventured very far from City Point. -
The Battle of Cold Harbor
Grant again attacked Confederate forces at Cold Harbor, losing over 7,000 men in twenty minutes. Although Lee suffered fewer casualties, his army never recovered from Grant's continual attacks. This was Lee's last clear victory of the war. -
Fall of Richmond
Served as the capital for the Confederacy. After a long period of fighting, General Grant captured Richmond, which led to the end of the war. -
General Lee defeated
On March 25, General Lee attacked General Grant's forces near Petersburg, but was defeated -- attacking and losing again on April 1. On April 2, Lee evacuated Richmond, the Confederate capital, and headed west to join with other forces. -
