Civil War Timeline

  • Start of the War

    After seceding from the Union due to Lincoln's election, Confederates fired on and captured the union help fort Sunmter in South Carolina. This triggered the start of the civil war.
  • Battle of Antietam

    The single bloodiest day in America. This forces Lee to retreat and leave Virginia. General McClellan is fired by president Lincoln because he was fed up, since McClellan misses the opportunity to follow and finish his injured soldiers.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    Lincoln released a law that freed all the of the slaves in the Confederacy and allowed them to join the Union army.
  • Battle of Gettysburg

  • Defeat of Vicksburg

  • New York City Draft Riots

  • Formation of the 54th Mass.

  • First Battle of Bull Run

    Union forces met Confederate soldiers in Manassas Virginia. It took place near the Bull Run creek. The Union expected to win easily but the Confederates took their first major win.
  • Gettysburg Address

  • Sherman's March to the Sea

  • Congress Passes the 13th Amendment

  • Creation of Freedman's Bureau

  • Surrender at Appomattox Courthouse

    Lee and Grant agreed to meet at the Appomattox Courthouse so that the South surrenders to the North. Grant's offers are generous, as he gave them no consequences and allowed the to go home in peace. This marks the end of the Civil War.
