The march was led by William Sherman. Shermen and his men destroyed many citys on their march. This was important because Sherman destoryed everything useful to the South. -
Fall of Richmond and Surrender at Appomattox
On April 2, 1865, Lee and his Confederates withdrew and the Union moved toward Richmond and the Union started devestating Richmond. Almost everything important in this city was destroyed. This led to the Surrender at Appomattox on April 9, 1865. With this the Confederacy gave up and now the Union finally won.
