    General William Sherman led a march from Atlanta, Georgia to Savannah, Georgia. After taking control of Atlanta, Sherman marched to Savannah, destroying everything in his path including cotton mills, lumber mills, and other industries that the South relied on for their economy. When he took over the port, the Confederate Army had fled and the Mayor surrendered.

The Union Army treated the Confederacy fairly by terms agreed to by the President and General Grant. When other generals heard of General Lee's surrender, they followed suit.
