Abe Lincoln was elected President
On November 6th, 1860 Abe Liclon was elected president. He was the first president from the Republican party to be elected president. Abe was the 16th president and served til 1865. -
South Carolina Secedes from the Union
South Carolina was the first state to secede from the Union, followed by Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisana, and Texas. A few months later Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee seceded fromt he Union, and the last state to secede was North Carolina. -
The Confederacy was formed
Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Texas joined to together to form the Confederacy. They wrote their own constitution and planned to be an independant nation. -
Abraham Lincoln was Inagurated.
Abe Lincoln's Inaguration Abe Lincoln was sent undercover to the White House to avoid danger since there was so much hate toward him and his motives, to give his inaguration and become the president. He proceded in an open carrige to the ceremony and gave the speech without any problems. -
Fort Sumpter was Attacked
Confederate soldiers attack the Union army at Fort Sumpter, which officially began the Civil War. -
Bull Run (@ Manassas)
The battle at Manassas, VA was the first major land battle. The Confederate victory gave the North some insight to tell them that this war would not be as easy to wins then they thought and that it would be a very long and costly war. -
Battle at Antietam
Lee's troops were heavily outnumbered and faced McClellan in bloody fighting. The battle produced over 23,000 casualties (more than all previous American wars combined), and was the bloodiest day in U.S. history. -
Emancipation Proclamation
Lincoln annouces that starting January 1, 1863 that any one held as slaves in the confederate states will be free, this only applied to the states rebelling against the Union, and not the loyal bordering states. -
Military Draft
Congress enforces the first draft in American history, requiring every man to serve in the army unless he can pay the government $300 or find a substitute. -
Battle of Gettysburg
The Battle of Gettysburg is considered the most important battle of the American Civil War. An assault, known as "Pickett's Charge" forced Lee and his army to withdraw, leadin to the Union's battle win. -
Battle of Cold Harbour
One of the last battles of the Civil War, the battle of Cold Harbor is a disaster for the Union. General Ulysses S. Grant makes a hopeless assualt that results in the deaths of 7,000 Union soldiers in twenty minutes. -
Lincoln's Second Term in Office
Lincoln gets sworn in as president for a second term as President of the United States. -
Confederacy Surrenders
"It would be useless and therefore cruel, to provoke the further effusion of blood," said Confederate General Robert E. Lee, "and I have arranged to meet with General Grant with a view to surrender." After 4 years of fighting the Civil War, Lee knew it was time to put an end to the fighting, and surrendered to the Union. -
Abraham Lincoln's Assassination
Shortly after the end of the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln is shot in a movie theater by John Wilkes Booth, and does not gain consciousness. He ends up dieing from his wound. -
Slavery is Abolished
The 13th Amendment is ratified and slavery is abolished.
