  • Anaconda Plan

    Goals: It called for strangling the Southern Confederacy, much like an Anaconda
    Leaders: General Winfield Scott
    Results: was never officially adopted, it did serve as a framework for what eventually occurred throughout the Civil War.
  • Ft. Sumter

    Goals: For the Confederates to take Fort Sumter from the Union.
    Leaders:
    Union: Major Robert Anderson
    Conferates: Brigadier General P.G.T. Beauregard
    Results: The Union had to withdraw and the South got control of the fort. The Civil War began.
  • 1st Battle of Bull Run

    Goals: Union wanted to capture Richmond
    Leaders:
    Union: General Irvin S. McDowell
    Confederates: Brigadier General P.G.T. Beauregard
    Results: The Confederates won because McDowell’s army retreated
  • Antietam

    Goals: Robert E. Lee wanted to carry the war into the Northern states and then George McClellan went to Maryland to stop him.
    Leaders:
    Union: George B McClellan
    Confederates: Robert E Lee
    Results: The Union claimed victory, but in reality, both sides retreated.
  • Battle of Fredericksburg

    Goals: The Union wanted to go to Richmond
    Leaders:
    Union: General Ambrose Burnside
    Confederates: General Robert E. Lee
    Results: The Confederates won.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    It was created by Lincoln. The Emancipation Proclamation declared that all slaves would be freed in the states that had seceded.
  • Battle of Chancellorsville

    Goals: Hooker went to follow through his campaign, but went into defense at the “Wilderness”.
    Leaders:
    Union: General Joseph Hooker
    Confederates: Robert E. Lee and Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson
    Results: The Confederates won and Hooker escaped.
  • Atlanta Campaign

    Goals: to destroy the Army of the Tennessee, capture Atlanta and cut off vital Confederate supply lines
    Leaders: William Sherman, John Bell, Joseph Johnson, Joseph Wheeler, William J. Hardee
    Results: James B. McPherson was killed during the battle. Also important because of the commercial and location importance of Atlanta itself.
  • Siege of Vicksburg

    Goals: maintain complete control of the southern portion of the river.
    Leaders: Ulysses S. Grant, John C. Pemberton.
    Results: On July 4, Vicksburg surrendered after prolonged siege operations.
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    Goals: most important engagement of the American Civil War, considered turning point.
    Leaders: Robert E. Lee, George Meade, Winfield Hancock
    Results: stopped Confederate General Robert E. Lee's second invasion of the North
  • Sherman’s March to the Sea

    Goals: James B. McPherson was killed during the battle.
    Leaders: William Sherman, William J. Hardee, Joseph Wheeler.
    Results: On September 1, 1864,Sherman and his army captured Atlanta, Georgia, an important transportation center in the Confederacy.
