South Secedes
Since Abraham Lincoln was elected president and was known to oppose slavery, South Carolina was voted to withdraw from the union. This was followed by the withdrawal of six more states. -
The South Creates a Government
The seven seceded states create the Confederate Constitution which was similar to United States Constitution, but with more autonomy of each state. -
West Virginia is Born
Unlike the rest of Virginia, the western countries had no desire to secede and were accepted into the union as West Virginia. -

A flag officer David Farragut led an assault head upwards the Mississippi river. In April 25 1862 he was command in New Orleans. -
Pope Campaign
John Pope Suffered defeat at the second battle of Bull run on August 29-30. General John porter was forced out the army because he fail to commit his troops battle quicky. -
First Conscription Act
With recruiting difficulties, an act was passed making men between ages 20 to 45 eligible to be called for military services. This seemed unfair to the poor, and caused protests in New York City to break out. -
Gettysburg Campaign
General Lee decided to declare war, and defeated Union forces at Winchester, Virginia, and went on to Pennsylvania. The encounter of the Union and Confederate forces lead to the Battle of Gettysburg, which Meade had won. -
Battle of Chattanooga
Union forces have pushed Confederate troops away from Chattanooga. This victory set the stage for General Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign. -
Grant's Wilderness Campaign
Grant’s Wilderness Campaign, fought between new Lt. Ulysses S. Grant and Gen. Robert E. Lee lasted for three days, forced Lee’s men back to the defenses at Richmond. Although Lee inflicted more casualties on the Union Force, Lee would not have replacements to continue putting up a fight. -
Attack of Cold Harbor
In the attack of Cold Harbor, Grant lost over 7,000 men in twenty minutes after an attempt to attack the Confederate. Although Lee suffered fewer casualties, he never recovered from Grant’s many attacks, such as his Wilderness Campaign. This would be Lee’s last clear victory. -
Abraham Lincoln Re-elected
On November 8, 1864, Abraham Lincoln was re-elected to presidency, although it did not seem like it would happen. He won with Andrew Johnson by his side as his Vice.
