Compromise of 1850
California is admitted as a free state, while Utah and New Mexico could decide whether they wanted to be a free or slave state. Texas gave up their claim on New Mexico territory. No slaves could be sold in Washington D.C., and the Fugitive Slave Act stated that citizens had to return runaway slaves. -
Dred Scott Decision
They came to the conclusion that slaves are not citizens but, property. Therefore, they do not have the right to sue. -
Confederacy
South Carolina secedes along with 6 other southern states, forming the Confederacy. -
First Bull Run
In Virginia, this was the South's first win with the help of Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson. -
Civil War

In the 7 days battle, Lee defeats McClellan, and protects Richmond from the Union. -

Lee invades Antietam, Maryland. 12,000 men were killed in the first 3 hours, resulting in a draw. -
Emancipation Proclamation
President Lincoln put the Emancipation Proclamation in place, freeing all enslaved people in rebellious states. -
Turning Point
During the Battle of Gettysburg, in 3 days nearly 50,000 men were killed for a huge Union victory. -
13th Amendment
This amendment abolished slavery in all states. -
Black Codes
Laws were enforced that limited the 4 million former slaves. -
Freedmen's Bureau
The Freedman's Bureau provided food, shelter, and education to the former slaves -
End of War
Lee surrenders to Grant at the Appomattox Court House. -
14th Amendment
This amendment stated that anyone born in the United States was a citizen, and that any former CSA leader was prevented from going into politics. -
15th Amendment
This amendment gave black men the right to vote.
