Lincoln was the first Republican. He was against slavery. Helped split the U.S. This was important because in the end Lincoln abolished slavery. -
Battle of Fort Sumter
Started at 4:30 A.M. Confederates opened fire with 50 cannons. Confederates won that battle. This was important because it started the Civil War. -
First Bull Run
Confederates won again. Thomas J. Jackson earned the name Stonewall. Union troops retreated. This was important because Lincoln realized after this battle that this war was going to be long. -
Battle of Shiloh
It was a Confederate surprise attack on Ulysses Grant and his troops. Resulted in 13,000 Unions killed and 10,000 Confederates. This was more men than all previous American wars. This was important because Lincoln was going to relieve Grant but he didn’t because he needed everyone to fight. -
Second Bull Run
Union outnumbered Confederates 75,000 to 55,000 and the Union were defeated. Army retreated to Washington again. Lincoln then relieves to the Pope. This was important because the Union lost another battle and this was a major upset. -
Battle of Antietam
This was the bloodiest day U.S. military history. The Confederate army was stopped here. By nightfall 26,000 people were dead or missing. This was important because there were a lot of casualties. -
Battle of Fredericksburg
The army of Potomac were defeated in Virginia. The Union lost 12,653 were killed. There were only 5,309 for the Confederates. This was important because this was a costly defeat for the Union. -
Battle of Chancellorsville
The Union was defeated again by a much smaller army. “Stonewall” Jackson was mortally wounded by his own soldiers. For the Union 17,000 were killed out of 130,000 and the Confederates 13,000 were killed out of 60,000. This was important because Hooker was the “one” lost the battle for the Union because he lost his confidence. -
Gettysburrg
The tides were turned when the Confederates lost at Gettysburg. Took three days to end the battle. There 51,000 deaths total. This was important because this helped the Union in the Civil War. -
Battle of Chickamauga
Confederates defeated the Union soldiers. This was a decisive victory for the Confederates. The Confederates trapped the Union soldiers in Chattanooga. This was important because it was ugly for Union right away but then after they got trapped they rallied against the Confederates. -
Battle of Chattanooga
The Union forces defeated the Confederates. One of the most dramatic things in battle history. The Union soldiers started yelling, “Chickamauga” and started siege and won the battle. -
Cold Harbor
A mistake by Grant made 7,000 men lose their lives. This only took 20 minutes. A Union soldier wrote done his last diary entry and it said, “I was killed.” This was important because there were a lot of casualties and it was all because a mistake. -
March to the Sea
Sherman with 62,000 men started a March to the Sea. Lincoln took the advice from Grant. Sherman boasted that “he can make Georgia howl.” This was important because Lincoln was sure of this but he decided after Grant convinced him. -
Lee Surrenders
Lee surrendered to Grant at the village of Appomattox Court House. Grant allowed Confederate officers to keep their sidearms and horses. This was important because this ended the Civil War. -
Lincoln Shot
Lincoln was in a theater watching “Our American Cousin.” During the third act John Wilkes Booth shoots Lincoln. The doctors attended to Lincoln in the theater but later moved him to a hospital.
