    Lincoln won the 1860 inaugurated as president in March of 1861. Lincoln wanted slaves free and the south was mad.
  • Fort Sumter

    The Battle of Fort Sumter was the first battle of the American Civil War and signaled the start of the war. It took place over two days from April. General Beauregard sent Major Anderson a message saying that he would fire in one hour if Anderson didn't surrender.
  • Battle of bull run

    General McDowell ordered the Union army to attack. The two inexperienced armies ran into many difficulties.The Confederates won the battle, but both sides suffered casualties. The Union suffered 2,896 casualties including 460 killed.
  • Battle of Antietam

    Union army fought, under General Joseph Hooker they attacked the Confederate army. Neither side was a winner in the battle of Antietam. The north however, claimed victory .
  • Emancipation Proclamation signed

    Only about 50,000 of 4 million slaves were immediately freed. The Emancipation Proclamation first, it only freed the slaves in the Confederate States that were not under Union control.
  • Battle of Vicksburg

    Battle of Vicksburg
    The Confederate Army of General Pemberton were dug in. They were going to be nearly impossible to defeat while hiding behind the defenses of the city. Over the first couple of days, Grant tried to break into the city by overwhelming them with his superior numbers. It didn't work. The Confederate army under General Robert E. Lee was defeated at the Battle of Gettysburg. These two victories marked the major turning point of the Civil War in favor of the Union.

    Deadliest battle of the civil war, 46,000 casualties nearly 8,000 deaths. General Meade and the Union Army were exhausted and had many casualties & deaths to deal with.

    This speech was short but profound, it was given by Abraham Lincoln. The Gettysburg address is referred to as one of the greatest speeches ever given.

    General Sherman's march took control of Atlanta (major railroad hub) and Savannah (major sea port), he also laid the land between the two destroying all that was in his path. This march was risky, they lived off of farmers and livestock to feed him army.

    This signaled the start of the end of the Civil War. Lincoln wanted peace, so Confederate soldiers would have to turn in their rifles and return home immediately, keep their horses and mules, and were given food.
  • Assassination of Lincoln

    President Abraham Lincoln was attending a play, sitting in the Presidential Box with his wife at the time of his assassination. At Ford's Theatre. His killer, John Wilkes Booth waited until a big joke and the audience laughed loudly, he entered the box and shot Lincoln in the back of the head.
