- Confederate President Jefferson Davis agreed to send delegates to a peace conference with President Lincoln and Secretary of State William Seward to end the Civil War.
- Davis insisted on Lincoln's recognition of the South's independence as a single country.

- General Lee attacked General Grant’s forces near Petersburg on March 25.
- General Lee was defeated by General Grant and held for surrender.
- He attacked Grant again on April 1 taking the loss again.

- The Washington had 68 major enclosed forts as well as 93 prepared rifles, cannons and black brick forts.
- It was a collection of the national park service properties.
- Other forts have become state and city parks, in the area.

- The Assassination of President Lincoln was shortly after 10 p.m. on April 14, 1865
- The assassination took place in Ford’s Theatre in Washington D.C. during the play "Our American Cousin."
- His killer was a Confederate named John Wilkes Booth, who was an actor who remained in the North during the Civil War despite his Confederate sympathies.

Final Surrenders among Remaining Confederate Troops

- Henry Wirz was hanged in the yard of the Old Capital Prison on November 10
- He was hanged for the murder of soldiers.
- He was tried by a military commission presided over by General Lew Wallace from August 23 to October 24
