Pierre Beauregard lead confederates to open fire cannons into Ft. Sumter in South Carolina starting the Civil War. -
Secession
Virginia secedes from the Union, as well as Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina. These states allowed the CSA to become 11 staes. -
Monitor vs. Merrimac
The Union Ironclad Merrimac sunk 2 Union wooden ships and battled the Union Ironclad Monitor, which ended in a draw making wooden ships obsolete. -
Antietam
The bloodiest day in US military history. Lee and his army are met by McClellan and his army in Maryland. 26,000 men are either dead, wounded or missing by the night. -
Gettysburg
Confederates are defeated at Gettysburg in PA. The battle site is now a national Cemetery ( named by Lincoln during his 2 minute Gettysburg Address) -
The 54th
The 54th Massachusetts, an African American regiment attempt to attack Fort Wagner, but fail in their attempt and over half the men die during the battle. -
Lincoln vs. McClellan
Lincoln wins the re- election of 1864 beating Democrat McClellan who was a US general. Lincoln wins 55% of the popular vote at this election. -
Sherman's March
William T. Sherman leads his troops down south and through Georgia destroying the cities as he goes leaving an over 300 mile long road of destruction. -
13th Amendment
Congress approves the 13th Amendment abolishing slavery to be added to the constitution. -
Appomattox
Grant surrounds Lee making him not able to escape or fight any longer. Lee surrenders to Grant at the Appomattox Court House in Virginia.
