Compromise of 1850
Created by Henry Clay to avert the crisis between the north and the south about slavery because of the land we gained after the Mexican-american war. To appease the north California admitted a a free state. As for the south the fugitive slave laws were enforced and popular sovereignty was for the both. -
Bleeding Kansas
a series of violence during the settling of the Kansas territory. the violence was over whether the territory would be a free state or lave state. supporter of both sides came flooding into the area in influence the decision and then violence broke out. -
Harpers Ferry Raid
The Harpers Ferry raid conducted by fanatical abolitionist John Brown is considered one of the major events that ultimately led to the American Civil War. Brown was hanged December 2 for murder and treason against the Commonwealth of Virginia. -

Abraham Lincoln a elected a the 16th president which led to outrage in the south because he opposed expansion of slavery in the territories. -

Battle of Antietam
This battle was significant because the attack plans of the csa were found wrapped in a cigar so the union had leverage. This was also one of the bloodiest single day of the Civil War. The result of the battle ends General Lee's first invasion of the North. Following the Union victory, President Lincoln will introduce the Emancipation Proclamation, an executive order that freed every slave in the Confederate States. -
Anacanda Plan
The Anaconda Plan was the Union's strategic plan to defeat the Confederacy at the start of the American Civil War. The goal was to defeat the rebellion by blockading southern ports and controlling the Mississippi river. The Monitor(union) and Merrimack(CSA). -
Emancipation Proclamation
The Emancipation Proclamation goes into effect by Lincoln which freed slaves in the north. Applauded by many abolitionists including Frederick Douglass, there are others who feel it does not go far enough to totally abolish slavery. -

General Lee's greatest victory is marred by the mortal wounding of "Stonewall" Jackson, who dies. Soon after, Lee asks Jefferson Davis for permission to invade the North and take the war out of Virginia. -

It was the bloodiest battle of the civil war and it was a victory for the union because Robert E. Lee walked away. but if looking at numbers the confederates won. -
Shermans March
Sherman marched to Atlanta setting homes and buildings on fire he "scorched the earth." and this was the first time that civilians were the targets. -
Freedmans Bureau
Freedmen's Bureau, was established by congress to help former black slaves and poor whites in the South in the aftermath of the U.S. Civil War with jobs and education it created universities for backs -
Ending of The War
Lee surrenders to Grant at the Appomattox court house. Lee asks that he and his men could keep their guns and their horses. Grant agrees thus ending the war. -
Compromise of 1877
The Compromise of 1877 was a purported informal, unwritten deal that settled the intensely disputed 1876 U.S. presidential election. Samuel Tilden vs Rutherford B Hayes. the south agrees to vote Hayes if north pulls out troops in the south. Results were disputed in Louisiana, Florida, South Carolina.
