The Confederacy forms
The South created their own country called the Confederate States of America. The states that were in the Confederacy at teh very beginning are South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas. -
Fort Sumter Attack
In South Carolina, the Confederacy attacked a base. No one was killed. Abraham Lincoln wanted to avoid conflict at all costs and didn't give any weapons, just food. Could be considered the first "battle" of the Civil War. -

General Joseph Johnson is replaced by Robert E Lee after being wounded. Union technically wins. Yet, it was too great a cost for the victory. -

This was a battle in Maryland that was extremely deadly. The Union could have won/ finished the war, but they retreated. There is no true winner. -

The Emancipation Proclamation is a document that said all slaves should be freed within the Confederacy. However, it didn't have much power because the Confederacy didn't listen to the Union. -

This battle helped the Union work their way to Vicksburg. It was fought on the Arkansas River. -

The Senate ratifies treaty that gives the territory, Alaska, from Russia. -
States Admitted
Congress passes a bill admitting Arkansas, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, North Carolina, and South Carolina into the Union. Virginia, Mississippi, and Texas were refused admission into the Union. They did not ratify the 14th amendment. -
Ulysses S. Grant promoted

Alaska is given to America
Russia turns over Alaska to the United States. It doesn't become a state until 1959.
