    The Election of 1860In the Election of 1860 the newly formed Republican party which was against slavery elected Abraham Lincoln as the president. When Lincoln was elected the southern states seceded the Union and formed the Confederate States of America and elected Jefferson Davis as their president.

    The Battle of Fort SumterPresident Lincoln said he would not attack the south or try to end slavery there but that he wanted to kepp the Union together. Then the Confederates started bombarding Fort Sumter in South Carolina and after the fort surrendered the Civil War had begun.

Then the Confederates railled behind General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson and gained more troops. The Union Then retreated to Washington ending the hopes of a quick war.

    Seven Days BattlesLincoln sent Union troops back into Virginia under General B. McCellan who faced General Robert E. Lee on June 26 1862 which became known as the Seven Days' Battles. The Confederates suffered many casualties but soon forced McCellan to retreat. Lincoln then sent General John Pope to Richmond but he was caught off gaurd and lost to Lee which was know as the second battle of Bull Run.

    The Battle of Antietam SummaryThe Confederate fources started crossing Maryland and met the Unon army along Antietam Creek which became know as the bloodiest single day battle in the Civil War. This was an important victory for the Union because Le had lost a third of his troops.

    Civil War: The War in the WestThe Unions stratigie was to take control of the Mississipp River and ports in the gulf of Mexico to divide the Confederates. The first major battle was Shiloh in Tennese when the Union forces led but General U. Grant won. The Union army next turned to Southern positions along the Mississipp and Union naval officer David Farragut captured New Orleans and went up the Mississipp capturing ports. General Grant in May began a seige of Vitburg until the Confederates surrendered in July.

    The Battle of Gettysburg SummaryGeneral Lee carried the battle into the North by advancing into Pennsylvania hoping to lower morale of the North. In July the Battle of Gettysburg began during wich the Confederat General Goerge Pickeet was ordered to attack the Union forces and most of the troops in Pickeets Charge where killed or captured. As a result of the Union victory support for the war was renewed and several weeks later Lincoln gave his Gettysburg Adress.

    Appomattox Court House National Park ServiceLincoln placed Grant in the command of all forces and faught Lee in several battles in Virginia which devestated the Confederate troops and supplies. And Union troops laid seige to Pettersburg and while this happened General William T. Sherman captured Atlanta and continued his destructive march through the Carolinas. In April Grant conquered Lees defences then Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox Courthouse.
