    Abraham Lincoln Elected
    Lincoln won with 180 of 303 electoral votes and 40% of the popular vote. With him as President people knew it wasn't if there would be a war but when.
  • Fort Sumter

    Fort Sumter
    The Confederates open fired on fort Sumter in the middle of a bay. No lives were lost other than in the after party. This was the official start of the Civil War.
  • Lincoln's Blockade

    Lincoln's Blockade
    Lincoln ordered a blockade of the ports in South Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Virginia, Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas. Cutting off the trade and transportation of weapons and ammunition.
  • 1st Battle of Bull Run

    1st Battle of Bull Run
    This was the first major battle of the armies in Virginia. The Union attacked the Confederates at Bull Run and pushed them back to Henry Hill before Confederate reinforcements came and forced the Union army to retreat back to Washington.
  • Monitor vs Virginia

    Monitor vs Virginia
    A Confederate ironclad took out two wooden ships then meet a draw with a Union ironclad. From then on wooden ships were considered obsolete.
  • Battle of Siloh

    Battle of Siloh
    A surprise attack by the Confederates on an unprepared Union camp. The confederates overpowered the Union but eventually the union troops found a defensive point and turned to the offensive driving the Confederates back. The Confederates Gen. Johnsten was wounded and replaced by Beauregard.
  • 7 Days Campain

    7 Days Campain
    A seven day battle which occured near Richmond between Lee's and McCelan's armies. Both sides had great losses but eventually McCelan withdrew back to Washington. This would have been a huge victory if it would have turned out the other way around.
  • Antietam

    Antietam
    Was the first major battle of the Maryland campaign taking place on Union soil. It was the bloodiest single day battle in American History with about 23,000 casualties. It was a failed attempt Lee went back to Virginia. This victory gave Lincoln the confidence to issue the Emancipation Proclomation.
  • 2nd battle of Bull Run

    2nd battle of Bull Run
    After a stalemate at Brawner Farm. A mass of Longstreets men appeared out of nowwhere and destroyed the Union's defenses. They were driven back to bull run and eventually to Centerville. This was an important battle in the Northern Virginia Campagne that raised the spirits of the South.
  • Emancipation Proclamation Issued

    Emancipation Proclamation Issued
    Made by President Lincoln it issues the freeing of all slaves in Confederate territory. And pushed African Americans to enlist in the Union Army. The Confederates did not follow this until later on so it wasn't really important till then.
  • Emancipation Proclamation takes affect

    Emancipation Proclamation takes affect
    On this day Lincoln signed the final E.P. freeing all slaves in rebel territory. Unfortunantly some rebel territories were not yet under Union control so this said that once they were all slaves there would be freed. Forigners considers the confederates as tfreedom fighters being held against their will but this proclamation eliminated all forign thoughts of this sort and made it clear they were now fighting in the defense of slavery.
  • Battle at Chancellorsville

    Battle at Chancellorsville
    On this day Lee and Jackson took 30,000 soldiers to the exposed flank of Hooker's men in Chancellorsville and defeated his much larger army. This was considered one of Lee's greatest victories.

    The bloodiest war in American history lasted 3 days and turned the tables on the Confederates in the war.
  • Siege of Vicksburg

    Siege of Vicksburg
    After a 6 week siege Grant took the last Confederate stronhold on the Mississippi and the Confederates were split into 2.
  • Gettysburg Address

    Gettysburg Address
    This was a speach given by Lincoln at a ceramony dedicating the battle feild (of the battle of Gettysburg) as a national cemetery. This was a famouse speach and re-enforced peoples beleifs on Lincoln.
  • Battle of Chattanooga

    Battle of Chattanooga
    The Confederates siege ended when Grant's men defeated Braxton and without orders drove the rebles from what had been thought to be an impeniterable position while yelling Chickamauga.
  • Ulysses S. Grant takes over the Union Army

    Ulysses S. Grant takes over the Union Army
    President Lincoln appointed Grant to command all of the armies of the Union and Sherman succeeded
  • Sherman Captures Atlanta

    Sherman Captures Atlanta
    Atlanta housed an important rail and supply center so when Sherman lead his men to victory there it was a big win for the Union.
  • Lincoln Re-Allected

    Lincoln Re-Allected
    Lincoln beat McClellan by a long shot with 212 of the 233 electoral votes possible. This goes to show how much impact he had on the civil war.
  • Sherman begins march to the sea

    Sherman begins march to the sea
    After taking Atlanta Sherman started leading 62,000 men to the sea through Georgia after being approved by Lincoln and Grant.
  • Savannah

    Savannah
    After a 300 mile long path of destruction Sherman reached Savanah and took it as a christmas present for Lincoln. It caused great damage to the rebels industry.
  • 13th Amendment Passed

    13th Amendment Passed
    On this day the 13th amendment was passed enforcing the ending of slavery in the U.S.A. and all places under its jurisdiction.
  • Union occupies Richmond

    Union occupies Richmond
    Grant advances on Petersberge and Richmond. Gan. Hill is killed and Lee evacuates both towns of his soldiers. Richmond was the Confederate capital so this was a big victory.
  • Lee surrenders

    Lee surrenders
    On this day Robert E. Lee surrendered to Grant at Appoxomattox after being surrounded. With the Confederates Major General out of the war the South had no chance and within a month their remaining forces surrendered.
  • Lincoln Killed

    Lincoln Killed
    While attending a play Lincoln was shot in the head by John Wilkes Booth. He was hospitalized in a nearby house but never regained consousnes. This was a devistating blow but luckily the war was already finished because the Confederates would have had a big advantage without Lincoln there.
