Lincoln elected
Abraham Lincoln was elected the 16th president of the United States over a Democratic Party, becoming the first Republican to win the presidency. He becomes involved with a series of slavery issues. -
Fort Sumter
Fort Sumter, was a place that both sides thought was thiers. On December 20, 1860 South Carolina left the Union. A few days later the Union sent 68 troops to Fort Sumter that was on an island that belonged to South Carolina. The North thought it belonged to them but the South thought it should be theirs since SC was with them. A few months later the Civil War began. -
Lincoln blockades the South
Lincoln sent the North to go blockade the South so they didn't have any ports to get anything or they cound not leave. They blocked the South ports so they could not get anything. -
1st Bull Run
The battle was taken place at a small stream called Bull Run. The Union assulted the Confederates so the battle began. Some people not ready for the war to begin. -
Shiloh
Was the second battle of the civil war. Confederate generals had a surprise attack on Grant's army. The Confederates were forced back, rso the Union won. -
Seven days of Campaign
The seven days of campaign begining on June 25 and ended on July 1. The union army was closing in on the confederate capital, the confederates kept fighting. The union went back to other territories it had won. Lee's failure let th Union army move to higher and better locations. Then Lee attacked, his army suffered. -
Monitor VS. Virgina
The fighting took place and the iron sides deflected the canons. This is known as the first battle useing ironclads. This was to try to break up the blockade. -
Antietam
Being able to see the souths progress up north and with a string of defeats this victory ment a lot. This also led to the Emancipation. -
Emancipation Proclamation issued
Lincoln thought about what would be besst for the nation. Seeing how slaves would run to join the Union army, he came up with the idea that on January 1 all rebelious states would have their slaves be free. -
2nd Bull Run
Lee sent half of his army to a federal supply base at Manassas, lead by the guy who won the 1st bull run. With a sieze of the supply, burned the depot. -
Emancipation takes effect
When Lincoln signs this he hopes to bond the bloody nation. It said that if all the rebels did not stop fighting by Jan. 1 1863 and join the Union all the slaves in the rebeling states would be set free. -
Chancellorsville
This is concidered General Lee's greatest victory. He defeted an army more than twice as large as his own by dividing up his army and attacking. They were forced to retreat. -
Gettysburg
This is considered one of the most important battle of the civil war. After an Union victory General Lee marched his army up to Pennsylvania. One day the Union army and the Confederates clashed on Gettysburg. Cause one of the bloodiest battles. Lee was forced to retreat. -
vicksburg
Union forces made plans to take control over the Confederates stronghold of vicksburg. The capture of vicksburg divided the confederacy and proved Grants genius. -
Gettysburg Address
This is a site of where the bloodies battle took place. This speech is known as one of the most famous speeches today. In the speech he mentioned human equal rights addressed in the decleration of independence. -
chattanooga
After a Confederate victory the Union retreats to chattanooga where the confederate general decides to take control over the city and the advantage with the Union supplys cut off. But in the end the Union beat the Confederates. -
Grant Takes Over
He commanded the winning Union army. During the war he became an aggresive leader and was given control of all the Union armies. He then becomes a hero then a president. -
Atlanta
An Union army general was housing people and cutting of supplies. The Confederates went and burned some cities. The Union won making the north feel better on their pride. -
Lincoln re-elected
Northern people were all excited when Lincoln was re-elected. He had a lot on his plate with the war now on it's fourth year. With the end of the war near. -
March to sea
A general went and torched the industiral part of Georgia. They destroyed most of the state before they captured the seaport. -
Savannah falls
An Union army general was housing people and cutting of supplies. The Confederates went and burned some cities. Sherman and his troops went to Savannah and destroyed everything in their path that could help the confederates. They got to Savannah and then finished the March to sea. -
13th amendment
This amendment officially ends slavery. This changed the Civil War dramaticly. This says that all slaves in a rebellion territory on January 1, 1863, would be declared free -
occupy richmond
Richmond Verigina was the capatal of the confederate states. It was also a center of industery and home to some prisons. The capital had became a focus on miltiary. -
lee surrenders
General Robert E. Lee surrenders his troops to the Union General, Ulysses S. Grant. Which marks the end of the civil war. -
Lincolns assassination
With the war closing in on the end Booth killed Lincoln in a theater while he was watching a play. The attack came five days after Lee surenders his army. Seven soldiers carried him to a house across the street. He was pronounced dead at 7:22 a.m.
