  • Battle of Fort Sumter

    Battle of Fort Sumter
    This battle went from April 12th through April 14, 1861. In this battle, it was the surrender of Fort Sumter, near Charleston, South Carolina. The Confederates demanded Fort Sumter to evacuate and after they evacuated the South's batteries opened fire at 4:30 AM on April 12. The outcome of this battle was that the Confederates won.

    The Union made advances towards the Confederacy's capital, Richmond, Va. The 35,000 Union troops met the 20,000 Confederate troops near Manassas Junction. Union troops pushed Confederate forces back untill Confederate troops arrived, rallied the troops then drove Union forces to retreat.
    Political Outcome:
    The victory rallied the Confederacy while showing the North the war would be much longer than thought.

    Summary:
    Naval battle to break the Union's blockade in Virginia. The Virginia opened fire on the Minnesota, and the Monitor appeared. The attack went from the Monitor to Minnesota. The Monitor was driven into shallow water and the Virginia concluded that it was disabled.

    -The South believed they had broken the blocade and the North shared feelings of relief and exultation.

    A.S. Johnston is wounded and both sides are set back 3 weeks.

The Peninsular Campaign of the U.S. Civil War was unsuccessful Union advance against Richmond, VA. The outcome of this battle was that Lee replaced Johnston as Army of Northern Virginia commander.

    -Union forces planned to pass the Rappahannock River and get to Richmond before Confederate forces could stop them. They were caught, but were still able to cross the river under fire after building bridges. They punched through the first line of Confederate defences, but were repulsed after.

    Political recriminations took place in the Union's army due to mismanagement of forces.

    Confederate forces, greatly outnumbered, split in two and attacked Union troops. Union troops fell back behind to the Rappahannock River and set up defences. After trying to force an attack on the Confederate troops across the river, he was flanked and lost a large amount of forces.

    Lee now could march easily into the North, due to little Union resistance. Jackson was wounded by friendly fire.

    The battle lasted for 3 days. Confederate forces arrived to get supplies to find that Union cavalry had been there. The Confederate military assembled in it's positions while Union forces arrived and set up defences.

    -Ended Confederacy advances in the north (lost 1/3 of military forces). Caused General Lee's first attempt to resign from General.

    Vicksburg began in the spring of 1862 and ended on July 4, 1863. The Union side of this battle won. Vicksburg was the final major military action in the Vicksburg Campaign of the American Civil War. In late May 1863, Union forces under U.S. Grant assaulted the Confederates position at Vicksburg. The outcome of this battle was on July 4, 183, the day after Pickett's Charge, General Grant captured Vicksburg after a three moth siege.

    The day that this battle started was September 19th and ended on the next day. The Confederates won this battle. On September 19, the two armies met in the woods near the banks of Chickamauga Creek. This battle had the highest loses o any other battle in the western theater.

    On November 19, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln told one speech that was very memorable. He told it at the dedication of a military cemetery at Gettsburg. His speech was about why the Union had to fight, and win, the Civil War. David Wills bought 17 acres oand turned it into a cemetery. The political outcome of the speech was he made a proposition that all men are created equal.

Grant did not retreat though.Instead, he attempted to move Lee to the left, setting the stage for the Battle of Spotslvania Courthouse. The Confederates won this battle. The outcome of this battle was inconclusive.

    This battle started on May *th and ended on May 21, 1864. In this battle Grant's army ditched Lee's and moved Southeast. They hoped that it would move Lee's army to better fighting places. The final attack was on May 21st and Grant left Lee moving Southeast trying to make him follow him. The Confederates won this battle.

    Four Union Ironclad ships attacked one Confederate ironclad at the Confederate's most important bay, Mobile Bay. Only losing one ship due to mines, the Union was able to easily take out the Confederate ship. The Confederate ship surrendered, and the Union gained controll of Mobile Bay.
    Political Outcome:
    The Union gains control of the Gulf coast with the capture.

Ulysses S, Grant had an unsuccessful attack of the city of Petersburg. Grant captured Fort Harrison on September 29th, The military outcome on this battle was that Grant couldn't win any battle he went into as a General of the union army.

    Licoln was born on February 12, 1809 and he died on April 15, 1865. John Wilkes Booth was the one who assassinated Lincoln. John had a plan to kidnap Lincoln and take him to Richmond but Lincoln never showed up where they were going to kidnap him at. While Lincoln was watching a performance at Theater where John was an actor at. John discovered that Lincoln was going to watch a performance there and then he made a plan to assassinate him, The political outcome of this was the President died.
