Four Slave States Stay in the Union.
Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, and Missouri did not join the Confederacy. These states did allow slavery but joined the Union. This showed that after time slave states can be swayed into submission giving hope to the north. -
First Battle of Bull Run.

This was the start of the prison camps. Where soldiers were held prisoners of war, and thousands died from over crowding and exposure. just in Alton Prison, almost 12,000 Confederate soldiers were incarcerated there. -

Confederate forces attacked Union forces under General Ulysses S. Grant at Shiloh, Tennessee. this was a sneak attack and an attempt to reduce Union numbers, but union reinforcments arrived and dominated the field.

Economic affects for the south #1
In the 11 states that formed the Confederacy, four out of ten people were slaves in 1862, and these people accounted for more than half the labor in those states. In the cotton regions the importance of slave labor was even greater. The money invested in slaves roughly equaled the total value of all farmland and farm buildings in the South. -

Economic affects for the north
The government needed money, and it went to great lengths to get it. First, it issued a massive bond which citizens and financial institutions were asked to buy bonds to fund the war. After that failed the north decided to print paper money. Then "greenbacks," as paper money became known.

The South had no factories to produce guns or ammunition, and its railroads were small and not interconnected, meaning it was hard for the South to move food, weapons and men quickly over long distances. -
