Lincoln elected president
Lincoln was elected the 16th president of the United States. This was big because of each of the cantidates views on slavery. Lincoln believed it was tearing the country apart. -
The battle of Fort Sumter
This started the civil war. Fort Sumter was in Confederate territory, but it was under Union controll. This spurred fighting and eventually the civil war. -
President Lincoln issues a blockade against the south
The Union blockades the souths ports and the blockade stands for most of the war. This is an example of a ship used in the blockade. This blockade was very effective on cutting them off. The south had to put resources into trying to run through the blockade. -
The first battle of bull run
The first major land battle of the war. Realized that the war was going to be much longer and bloodier than they both thought. The Confederates had fewer poeple killed injured or captured, so technically it was a confederate win. Both sides lost many poeple. -
Monitor Vs. Virginia Naval Battle
First naval battle of the time with iron clad ships. Part of the effort by the confederacy to break the Union blockade. The Virginia (Ship) destroyed two ships. -
Battle of Shiloh
This was a two day battle. The Union and Confederacy went bak and forth. The Union ultimatly won because of Confederate confusion. -
7 days campaign start
The start of the 7 days campaign. Campaigned for seven days. Confederates continually attacked Union places, and got defeated. Confederates learned that they need to be smarter. -
2nd battle of Bull Run
This was the 2nd battle of bull run. The confederates captured the Union supply depot at Manassas Junction. The Unions needed the depot so they fought for it. -
Battle of Antietam
Union soldiers chased Confederates into a vally where they fought. The confederates were on the defensive and the Union was attacking. -
Emancipation Proclimation Issued
President Lincoln issues the Emancipation Proclimation, stating that all slaves are free. He ordered that all slaves in both the Union and Confederacy were to be set free. -

The Emancipation Proclimation takes effect. This freed the slaves from the south. It stated that any slaves that were not set free would be forcibly taken away from them. -
Battle at Chancellorsville
General Lee's "Perfect battle". His tactis worked out perfectly as he split his army to accomodate for the larger enemy force. This was a significant Confederate victory. -
Battle of Gettysburg
The Confederates were defeated at gettysburg. Largest number of cassualties in a battle. The battle hurt both sides. -
Siege of Vicksburg
The Union sorounded the Confederates at a base on the Mississippi. With all sides blocked off the Confederates had to surrender. The Union would hold the Mississippi for the rest of the war. -
Gettysburg Address
Lincoln made this speech to the poeple to talk about the civil war and what it stood for. This is one of the most renoun speeches in the United States. He also talked about the Declaration of Independence and what it stood for. -
Battle at Chattanooga
This was a big battle at the end of the Chattanooga campaign. The Confederates besieged the Union untill they recieved reinforcments from the Mississippi. -
Ulysses S. Grant takes over the Union Army
Ulysses S. Grant takes over the Union Army. This was the turning point of the war. He led the Union to victory because of his great tactics. -
Sherman captures Atlanta
William Sherman captures Atlanta. This was part of the Union's campaign to cut off south supply lines. They overwhelmed confederate forces and took controll of Atlanta. -
Lincoln reelected
Lincoln was reelected the president of the United States. The voters showed complete confidence in him, as he was reelected. He also was able to finish the war because he was reelected. -
Sherman begins march to the sea
Shermans troops left Atlanta and went towards the sea, locking in their python method. This led to the final battles and the Union's victory. -
Savannah, GA falls to the Union
This was big for the Union. This led to occupy Richmond and eventually General Lee surrendering. This was the final event that set it in stone. -
13th Amendment passed
This admendment officially outlawed slavery and involantary servitude. This was only limited by the punishment for a crime. -
Union Army occupies Richmond, VA
The Union army moves in on Richmond and occupies the town. This was a major point for the confederates. They needed it back. -
Robert E. Lee surrenders
Robert E. Lee surrenders, ending the war completely. This meant a Union victory and the confederacy and union reunited. The United States were back together after a almost 5 year war. -
Lincoln assassinated
President Lincoln was shot and killed in the Ford's theater. First time a president was assassinated. This was an attempt to restore the confederate cause.
