Election of Lincoln
During the election of 1860, Lincoln won the election and became the 16th president of the United States. Though Lincoln recieved 40 percent of the popular votes, he successfully defeated the other three canidates. Lincoln was also the first Republican to win the presidency. Before this, Lincoln was a Kentucky born lawyer, and was also a former Whig representative to Congress. -
TX Secedes from Union
On Feb 21 1861, Texas becomes the seventh state to secede from the Union, when a state convention was held. The Texans who voted to leave the Union did so over the objections of Sam Houston, who was the govenor of Texas.
Texas’ seccesion completed the first round of states to seccede from the union. Texas was part of these seven states, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas. -
Houston kicked out of office
The states that wanted to secede from the U.S had a convention in January 1861. Houston accepted to leave the union, but didn't want to go to war with the U.S because he knew they'd lose. The convention deposed him. Sam Houston retired, and died in Huntsville, Texas. -
Battle at Fort Sumter
Fort Sumter was the site of the first shots of the Civil War. Fort Sumter was originally constructed as a coastal garrison. President Abraham Lincoln announced plans to resupply the fort after U.S Major Robert Anderson occupied the unfinished fort. Then Confederate General P.G.T. Beauregard bombarded Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861. -
Battle of Galveston
The battle of Galveston was both a naval and a land battle of this civil war. General John B. Magruder, gave the recapture of Galveston a top priority. On Jan 1st 1863, four Confederate gunboats appeared, coming down the bay toward Galveston. Soon afterward, the Rebels commenced a land attack. -

Battle of Sabine Pass
The battle of Sabine pass turned back one of several union attempts to invade parts of Texas. The U.S navy blockaded the beginning of the coast, while the confederates fortified the major ports. -
Red River Campaign, March 10 - May 22, 1864
The red river campaign comprised a series of battles fought along the red river in Louisiana. The campaign was the idea of union general Henry W. Halleck, and was also a diversion from Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant's plan to surround the main confederate armies by using banks army of the gulf to capture Mobile, Alabama. It was a union failure, characterized by poor planning and mismanagement, not a single objective was occomplished. -
End of Civil War
Confederate General Edmund Kirby Smith, who was the commander of confederate forces that were located west of the Mississippi, signed the surrender terms. With Smiths surrender, the last of the confederate armies no longer existed. This brought an end to the civil war. -
Battle of Palmito Ranch
The final battle of the civil war took place at palmetto ranch.It was considered the last engagement between organized forces of the Union and the confederate states. This took place more than a month after General Robert E. Lee's surrender. -
