Sam Houston refused to swear to the Confederacy when Texas seceded from the Union to not fight in a war. Later Houston was removed from governor. -

The Red River Campaign ended on May 22,1864. A long pust to put Union troops in to Texas. They fought in Louisiana (Red River). The union had about 30,000 and the Confederacy 6,000-15,000 troops. -
End of Civil War April 9, 1865
By the end of the four year war the union came out on top over the confederacy. Robert E. Lee surrounded Ulysses S. Grant at the Appomattox Courthouse. -

The freed slaves where able to vote for the first time 1876. Ulysses S. Grant was the president at the time. This era was the protection of African Americans in the South.
