Assassination

President Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes as he watched a play at Ford's theater.

Andrew Johnson

Apr 15, 1865

Andrew Johnson was quickly sworn into office after president Lincoln died .Passed the 13th amendment that abolished slavery forever.

14th ammendment

Gave African Americans citizenship and said that states had to provide for all

16 African Americans were elected to the u.s congress. First public schools were established in the south.

Carpetbaggers

Many northers moved south to start businesses called carpetbaggers "Yankee invaders"

Disbanded all southern state governments. Ex-Confederates could NOT vote.
