Secedes from the Union
South Carolina was the first state to break away from the Union, followed by Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina. -
West Virginia
West Virginia breaks away from Virginia because of their difference in opinion. -
Emancipation Proclamation
Declared “forever free” the slaves in the confederate states still in rebellion. However, no slave was freed immediately. The proclamation changed the war aim from keeping the Union together to ending slavery. -
Gettysburg Address
A statement given out by Abraham Lincoln and was used to creat a national cemetery. The Gettysburg Address was trying to send a message to the families and the people who fought in the war that the people deserve liberty, equality, and freedom. He wanted those who fought in the war to be remembered as hero’s due to the fact that they sacrificed their lives to fight for a cause they believed strongly about. -
Wade-Davis Bill
A bill that required 50% of voters to agree and resulted in stronger emancipation safe guards -
Election of 1864
McClellan ran against Lincoln. The democrats were split between who to choose. Copperheads thought Lincoln would lose because of the Civil War, so they nominated General McClellan. Their fear weakened the Democrats, resulting in Lincoln to win. -
Black Codes
Black Codes were laws designed to regulate the affairs of the emancipated blacks and keep them as slaves. They restored pre-emancipated race-relations, and penalties imposed on black who ‘jumped’ their labor contracts which made them work for 1 year for minimal pay. They weren’t allowed to be on jury and couldn’t vote. -
13th Amendment
Abolished slavery. -
Freedmen Bureau
Freedmen’s Bureau was founded by Congress. It provided food, clothing, medical care, and education to newly emancipated blacks and it taught 200,000 blacks how to read.
Andrew Johnson was not a fan and got rid of it in 1872. -
Lincoln’s assassination
April 14th, 1865, Lincoln went to Ford’s Theatre to watch a play when John Wilkes Booth shot Lincoln in the Head. He jumped out of the balcony and broke his leg, however he was still able to get away. 12 days later Booth was killed. He tried to surrender but he wasn’t given the chance. The South was originally happy, but soon realized that things were better with Lincoln as president than with Congress in charge. Andrew Johnson took over as president. -
Klu Klux Klan
The K.K.K. was created to scare black slaves into submission. They went as far as killing and murdering blacks. Congress passed the Harsh Force Acts and managed to stamp out some of these cruel acts. -
Reconstruction Act
The Act divided the South into 5 military districts, each commanded by a general. It also required states wishing to be administered, to pass the 14th amendment. The 15th amendment was also passed. -
14th Amendment
- Gave civil rights and citizenship to freedmen
- Reduced congress representation of states that didn’t;t let blacks on the ballot
- Disqualified from office former confederates and guaranteed federal debt

15th Amendment
Granted black men the right to vote. -
Compromise 1877
The compromise removed of all remaining military forces in Confederate states, settled remaining disputes, gave Ulysses S. Grant another opportunity to run for presided, created an electoral common, Southern Democrats would acknowledge Rutherford Hayes as president, and they constructed another railroad.
