  • Start of the War

    After seceding from the union due to Lincolns election, Confederates fired on and captured the union held Fort Sumter in South Carolina. This event triggered the start of the Civil war.
  • First Battle of Bull Run

    When Lincoln ordered an invasion of the rebel capitol Richmond. Fighting broke out by a little creek called Bull Run and eventually the Confederates win and hold their ground.The North is shocked and Lincoln starts to take the south more seriously and gets a real army to fight them.
  • Battle of Antietam

    The battle lasted all day and was the bloodiest single day of war. Lee was forced to withdraw. 22,717 died or was wounded and Lincoln fired his General McClellan for not following Lee and finishing him off.
  • Emancipation Proclomation

    Lincoln proclaimed that all slaves in the confederate states were free. He thought this was okay because it was a military act. He didn't free all states because he didn't want to lose the border states.
  • Formation of the 54th Mass

    Lincoln allows black soldiers into the army. The 54th of Massachusetts was the most famous black regiment. They showed great courage even thought they were given the worst jobs in the army and were paid less.
  • Battle of Gettysbrg

    Lee's troops went to get supplies and they ran into the Union troops. They fought for three days and it was one of the bloodiest battles. It was also the turning point for the north after they won because Lee got more discouraged after it.
  • Defeat of Vicksburg

    Union defeated the confederate at Vicksburg with general Grant. It was the last stronghold of the confederates. Grant settled for a long siege and the confederates ate mules and dogs to survive and finally after a month and a half they surrendered and this fulfilled the anaconda plan.
  • New York City Draft Riots

    More than 1,000 people were killed by mostly Irish rioters who thought that the blacks were going to steal all their jobs. They torched government buildings and killed many innocent people.
  • Gettysburg Address

    Lincoln went to Gettysburg to speak at a dedication to all the soldiers who died and gave a short speech that became very famous. He said that we can't let the soldiers die for nothing and all men are created equal so we should continue fighting for democracy.
  • Sherman's March to the Sea

    General Grant tells Sherman to do Total War so his troops tore up rail lines, destroyed crops, and burned and looted towns. He cut a path of destruction for 300 miles.
  • Congress Passes 13th Amendment

    Lincoln urges congress to pass a law to end slavery and so they passed the 13th amendment to abolish slavery and make it illegal. It nullified all acts that went against it.
  • Creation of Freedman's Bureau

    A government organisation that tried to help former slaves by looking for lost family, educate, and letting the children go to school and they would then go home and teach the parents. This helped over 150,000 blacks.
  • Surrender at Appotomax Courthouse

    General Lee surrendered finally in Virginia and the war ended. Grant offered generous terms of surrender for them to just go home in peace. The south is devastated and needs to be reconstructed.
  • Assassination of Abraham Lincoln

    Five days after the surrender Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth who was an actor. Lincoln had gone to a play with his wife. Booth was later hunted down and killed. Lincoln died a day after he was shot.
