The United States purchased land from France that doubled the size of their country. -
California Gold Rush
People start moving to California because of all the gold that was there. Since it would upset the balance of slave and free states, President Zachary Taylor tries to bring California in as neither a free nor slave state, which later made the Compromise of 1850. -
The Compromise of 1850
Has five parts:
1. California= free state
2. Land won from mexico is open to slavery until they become states, then vote on it.
3. Slave auctions banned in Washington D.C.
4. Texas received 10$ million to not advocate for slavery.
5. Fugitive slave act- tougher punishment on northerners who help slaves escape the south -
Kansas- Nebraska Act
Created 2 new states, slavery was left to popular sovereignty, people rushed to new states to vote on slavery. Caused tension, conflicts, and violence. -
The Execution of John Brown
After trying to set slaves free, John gets arrested by the Southern government and executed for treason. -
Southern States Withdraw from the Union
South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Texas secede from the United States. -
Confederate States of America
Old southern states named Confederate States of America founded as independent republic. -
Battle of Bull Run
First battle in the Civil War. 2,896 northerners and 1,982 southerners die. Very bloody and deadly -
Battle of Shiloh
The confederates launch attack on Grant after fleeing original battle. More soldiers died in one day than all the wars combined. Only ninth bloodiest battle. 23,000 people died total -
Battle of Antietem
Lee pushed into north territory and fights General George McClellan. Lee kills/wounds 22,000 men in one day, but he retreats.
McClellan gets fired. -
Emancipation Proclamation
This was a decree freeing all enslaved people in states still in rebellion. -
Pickett's Charge
7,000 Confederates die in 30 minutes
Union casualties are 23,000
Confederate casualties are 28, 000 (⅓ of Lee’s army) -
Sherman's March
William Tecumseh Sherman marches to Atlanta and burns everything to show the south the horrors of war. -
The Thirteenth Amendment is written
The Thirteenth Amendment bans slavery from everyone forever. -
General Lee surrenders at Appomattox Courthouse
Lee's continental army surrenders to the union -
Military Reconstruction Act
divides former confederacy into five military districts. -
Ulysses S. Grant becomes President
He was a great general but a terrible politician, so he left all politics to Congress. -
Fifteenth Amendment is applied
gives any citizen the right to vote disregarding race, ethnicity, etc. -
Panic of 1873
Banks go bankrupt, so sets off a deep depression -
Compromise of 1877
Rutherford B. Hayes is elected but it’s disputed. Hayes ends up removing troops from the south.
