Abraham Lincoln was elected as president on November 6, 1860. He led many wars and helped end slavery. In many peoples minds, he was one of the greatest presidents in the US.

South Carolina Secedes

South Carolina Secedes means they were the first state to secede from the federal union. South Carolina had lots of problems with the United States over slavery, state rights, and tariffs. Jefferson Davis lead South Carolina seceding.

Confederation Formed

Feb 9, 1861

This was people trying to get the BNA colonies combined. The six states that seceded met in Alabama the establish a unified government.

Civil War Begins

This war started of slavery states and non slavery state, economic interest, cultural values. Abraham Lincoln was the main leader for this war and helped end slavery. This war also lasted four 4 years. This war happened mainly in the South states.

First battle of the Bull Run

Jul 21, 1861

When the union and confederate armies clashed and started what is called the bull run on a small river. 35,000 started marching and ended up fighting 20,000 soldiers. Irvin McDowell led this battle.

Nava Battles : Monitor and Merrimac

Mar 9, 1862

This was a confederate effort to break up the union blockade of the southern ports, including Richmond and Norfolk Virgina. Lieutenant John Lorimer Worden led this small battle, and only had 261 killed.

Battle of Shiloh

Apr 7, 1862

This was a big win for the Union in the Civil War. The union ended up ending lots of things and this battle had over 23,000 deaths. This was a big battle.

Second battle of the bull run

Aug 28, 1862

With over 9,000 casualties and the rebels winning, this was a very big battle. This second battle was known as the “ Second Manassas in the South”, and was led by Robert Lee.

Emancipation Proclamation

Jan 1, 1863

Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation when the country entered the third year of the civil war. This bill issued that any slaves that were being held we allowed to be free.

Siege of Vicksburg

May 18, 1863

This battle gave the Union control of the Mississippi River in the American civil war. General Ulysses S. Grants union army moved south during this. The battle had over 1611 deaths. Joh C. Pemberton’s led this battle.

Gettysburg

Jul 1, 1863

This battle mad a boost and put a definitive end to Confederae General Robert E. Lee’s plan to invade the north. General George G. Meade led this battle. Over 33,000 were wounded and over 7,000 dead.

Reconstruction of the South

Period: Dec 8, 1863 to Mar 31, 1877

This was an effort to reintegrate Southern states from the Confederacy and 4 million newly-freed people into the United States. President Lincoln led this.

Lincoln Re-elected

Nov 8, 1864

On November 8, 1864, Abraham Lincoln got his second term. Winning the Civil War helped him big time on getting re-elected and this made him the first president to get a second term since Andrew Jackson.

Robert E. Lee Surrenders

Apr 9, 1865

Confederate General Robert E. Lee Surrenderd his army of
North Virgina , making the civil war end on April 9, 1865.

Lincoln Assassination

On April 14, 1865, famous actor, John Wilkes Booth, assassinated President Lincoln at fords theatre in Washington D.C. This was only 5 days before Robert E. lee surrendered.
