Naval artillery drove them back, but then confederate "cottonclads" struck from the rear of the union squadron. ship Neptune was sunken, and Westfield went down in an explosion, the commander dying in exploding it instead of giving it up. the north retreated, ignoring surrender demands. -
Battle of Sabine Pass
The battle took place on the southernmost part of texas & oklahoma. More than 20 warships loaded with more than 4000 trained union soldiers and seamen surrendered to the 47 confederate residents of a mud hut called fort griffin with 6 artillery guns within 2 hours. The confederacy was led by Dick Dowling, a brilliant military mind. The union was trying to get the Confederacy out of the Sabine Pass. -
Battle of Palmito Ranch
This confederate victory marked the final battle of the American Civil War. Col. Theodore H. Barrett led union forces for most of the 12th and 13th, the federals led by Col. John S. "rip" Ford. Barrett withdrew his command a few miles from palmito ranch along a bend near the Rio Grande river. At 4:00 pm, a large Confederate cavalry force approached, and the federals formed a battle line. The confederates barraged the Unions, and Barrett ordered a retreat, ending the war with southern victory.
