Civil War Battles in Texas

  • Battle of Galveston

The battle took place in Galveston, TX and was held on both land and water. On October 4th, 1862, Commander William B. Renshaw part of the Union blockade demanded surrender of Texas’s most important port. Thinking it was indefensible Gen. Paul O. Hébert ordered to remove all artillery from Galveston Island, and Col. Joseph J. Cook evacuated all his men. Later, Maj. Gen. John Bankhead Magruder replaced Hébert and started to organize the recapture of Galveston. Eventually, Magruder did succeed.
  • Battle of Sabine Pass

The battle took place at Sabine pass, the southernmost point of the border between Texas and Louisiana. Lieutenant Dick Dowling commanded the Davis guards named after Confederate President Jefferson Davis. The Confederacy recognized the Sabine pass's potential, but the Union did not, which made it easy to dispel the Union from the pass and for the Confederacy to establish Fort Griffin (made at the entrance with compacted mud). 47 Confederates had defeated 4000 Union soldiers and 20 warships.
  • Battle of Palmito Ranch

The battle took place in Cameron County at Palmito Ranch, TX on May 12-13, 1865. The commander of the Union forces was Col. Theodore H. Barrett and the commander of the Confederate forces was Col. John S. “Rip” Ford. After a battle line was formed by the Federals, Southern forces used artillery on the Union line, causing Barrett to order a retreat. Ford called off pursuit after chasing Barrett’s men for 7 miles, ending the battle. Shortly after, Confederate forces surrendered to Union officials.
