• South was willing to fight for federal property it considered to be its own following secession.

Cause: Confederate wanted Maryland to join the Confederacy for the Union to desperately need the Europeans.
Effect:

Battle of Gettysburg
Cause: Hope that invasion of Union Territory would weaken Northern support for the war.
Effect:
• 51,000 causalities
• Confederates retreated in defeat
• Marked the beginning of the end for the Confederate forces in the east. -
Battle of Vicksburg
Cause: General Ulysses(union) wanted to siege Vicksburg b/c whoever controlled high ground would control traffic on the whole river
Effect:
• Confederation loss Vicksburg/ control of Mississippi river and the ability to move soldiers and supplies.
• Union gaining control cut off Confederation in the East -
Battle of Atlanta
Cause: Union wanted to take over Confederation key point of Railroad lines and industry/disrupt the capacity to resupply its troops.
Effect:
• South was devastated a lot of crops and livestock were destroyed this allowed Lincoln to win the election easily.
• Lincoln called a truce with the confederacy allowing them to keep the land although victory was close.
