    This is Fort Sumter Lincoln decided to send in supplies for the fort but the south heard of this and took advantage of it because this meant the fort wasn't strong enough and they needed supplies. They sent in 500 men to take it over in 32 hours the battle was done and the confederate had the base

    Battle of Fort Sumter
    The battle of Fort Sumter was the start of the Civil War. On April 12, 1861, General P.G.T. Beauregard opened fire on the Union garrison holding Fort Sumter. The bombardment lasted 34 hours until finally at 2:30pm Major Robert Anderson surrendered the fort, the fort was evacuated the next day. The Confederates had the Union outnumbered and defeated them. No soldiers were killed in the battle.

    History videoOne of the first civil war battle's occured at manasass. People thought this would be a sport so they showed with picnic baskets and got a suprise. The unuion had 35,000 troops while the confederate's had only 20,000. Confederates won because of the small force they led to the side and ambushed the union. This is the battle that caused the union to realise that winning the war would not be easy. The south lacked communication though and had to time very precisely how they attack.

    On February 12, 1862 a week after capturing Fort Henery General Ulysses S. Grant began his assult on Fort Donelson in Stewart County, Tennesee. The Confederates tried an all out attack to try to break Grant's investment lines. The attack failed and on February 16, 1862 the Confederates surrendered. 2,691 Union troops were killed, wounded, or missing/captured and 13,846 Confederate troops were killed, wounded, or missing/ captured. This was a crushing victory for the Union.

No one Signifficant was invovled in the battle. The CSS Virginia and the USS Moniter met and circled each other for 4 hours the cannon balls bounced off the ships. No one won the battle they both retreated without damage.

    On march 26 1862, union Maj. John M. Chivington led 400 soldiers to the pass.They had already gone ahead and destroyed all of the confederate states cattle and helpful items. They then met Maj. Charles L. Pyron and his men about 1 1/2 miles into the pass. They went in with their heads held high and beat the confederate states.

    Map of Glorieta PassBetween March 26th and 28th of 1862, 1,300 Union and 1,340 Confederate soldiers fought in Glorieta Pass. Under the command of Major M. Chivington, the Union force captured some rebels and then advanced to the main forces behind them but were thrown back by the artillery. The Major regrouped, split his force to two sides of the Pass and fired for revenge. No one attacked for a day. The next morning, after reinforments arrived, the Union formed a battle line and won the Battle of Glorieta Pass.

    Gen.Josegh E. Johnson attempted to destoy two federal corps that isolated south of the Chickahoniy river. The attack was not well coordinated but drove back the IV corp. Both sides claimed victory, confederate Robert H. was killed.

    Fort Ridgely This war happened at New Ulm, MN between the Dakota people and the Union soldiers. Chief Little Crow led the Dakota. The Union won. The Battle of Fort Ridgely was an attack by the Dakota people over anger at their food rations they recieved from the federal government. Union troops handled the rebellion. More than 500 whites were killed and 2000 Indians were captured.

    John Browns raid at Harper's FerryA battle that was fought in Northern Virginia in a town called Frederick. People that were involved in this battle was General Robert E. Lee and General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson both generals for the south and General George B. McClenllan. The south won the battle at Harper's Ferry because of a Union surrender on September 15th, 1862

    Robert E. Lee surrounded the force and captured it. Robert split his army in four groups. Dixon S. Miles surrounded garrison which was 12,000 miles. When he surrounded the area he got wounded by a fired gunshot. The confederates tokk victory.

    The Battle of Fredericksburg takes place in the streets of Fredericksburg. The Union and confederate troops were involved. 9,000 were killed, wounded and missing. Union forces bombarded Fredericksburg with 150 cannons. In attempt to suppress the snipper fire, Burnside ordered Union air tillery to bombard the town.     The Battle of Stone's River took place in Murfeesoro, Tennessee. There were two sides of the war, the Union (run by William Rosecrans) and the Confederate (run by Braxton Bragg). The armies collided along Stone's River on New Years Eve. The Confederate army was originally sucessful in driving the Union army back, but the Union did not break. The battle lasted from Dec. 31, 1862, to Jan. 2, 1863. The Union won the war.

    Union general Hooker thought he had a great plan to defeat the confederates. He would send 10,000 troops to Richmond to cut the army off from their capitol, but Confederate general Lee sent men to attack the unions left flank. After days of violent fighting, general Hooker retreated. There were heavy losses on both sided, 17,000 deaths Hooker's side, and 13,000 on Lee's.

President Abraham Lincoln had lost his confidence in the potomic's commander Joseph Hooker after the defeat at chancerville. Lee planed to assemble his army in the brand new cross roads.

    The 54th regiment lead an attack on Fort Wagner. The 54th which consisted of almost all blacks scaled fort wagner adn went hand to hand combat with the confederetes. The 54th lost 42% of there men, but the blacks earned respect for their bravery.

Braxton Bragg's Army of Tennnessee defeated a union force commanded by General William Rosecrans in th ebattle of Chickamauga. The south Won the battle. On September 18-20, 1863, Rosecrans' troops pushed the confederates out of Chickamauga. After 2 days of the battle, the rebels forced Rosecrans to give away, with heavy losses on both sides. Chickamauga and score a lasting victory in the region that November.

Over 12 days followed, union troops broke the Confederate line, but the
    Rebels managed to close the gap and hold their ground.

The Confederacy won the battle of Petersburg, but the battle of Petersburg lead to the Union victory in the Civil War.

    More InfoJohn Bell Hood and his Confederate Army (33,000 people) were involved against John M. Schofield and his Union Army (30,000 people). Hood's plan didn't work and Schofield's was left mostly unscathed. November 30th, the Confederate Army charges into the Union defenses but failed. Thomas's Union force joined Schofield and Confederate Army suffered significant casualties. The Union won the Battle of Franklin.

It was the first time ever it ended in a union victory. 3 big events that happened during it was six of the generals were killed and one of the good commanders. Also in the beginning of the war Confederates charged into the union defenses and failed. 1,750 died and 1,033 were wonded out of both of the armys.

    In November 1864, Gen. John Bell Hood led the Army of Tennessee north toward Nashville. On the night of December 14th, Thomas informed Maj. Gen. Henry W. Halleck that he would attack the next day. For the next ten days the pursuit continued until the beaten and battered Army of Tennessee recrossed the Tennessee River.

    Union flooded into the Appomettox County from the West and South. The Union cut of and was trying to desroy the army. Lee (the Confederates general) agreed to retreat and surrender. This picture shows when General Lee was surrendering to the Union in the Appomattox Court House which is now an important and historic land mark.
