Battle of 1st Bull Run
On July 21, 1861, the Union led by McDowell, battled aganist the Confederates led by Beauregard and Johnston at Manasses, Virginia. At first, the Confederates seemed to lose, but that changed when Johnston's reinforcements arrived. The Confederates soon began to push the Union back as they retreated to Washington D.C. The results showed both sides that the war would be longer and more bloodier than they thought. -
Battle of Hampton Roads
The Battle of Hampton Roads took place on Mar.8,1862, at Hampton Roads, Virginia. The Union led by Goldsborough, fought the Confederates led by Buchanan. This was the first battle that involved inronclads. The result was an indecisive victory, and the Virginia port remained the same. -
Battle of Shiloh
The Union, led by Grant, faced the Confederates led by Johnston, on Apr. 6, 1862 at Shiloh, Tennessee. The Confederates seemed to win with the early suprise attack, but reinforcements arrived and the tide of the battle changed. Johnston was killed, and the Confederates were forced to retreat. The result was the bloodiest battle and the Union emerged vitorious. -
Fort Sumter
The Union led by Anderson faced off against the Confederates led by Beauregard on Apr.12,1862 at Fort Sumter at Charleston,South Carolina. The Confederates attacked the Union before they could get reinforcements. The Union was forced to surrender after they ran out of ammunition. This marked the beginning of the Civil War. -
Battle of 2nd Bull Run
The Union led by Jackson, faced off against Pope's Confederates at Manasses, Virginia on Aug.28,1862. Jackson captured Pope's supply depot messing up his defenses. Pope was forced to retreat after many attacks by the Confederacy. The Confederates emerged victorious, and drove the Union back to the first battleground. -
Battle of Antietam
On September 17, 1862, Lee's Confederates and McClellan's Union battled at Antietam Creek at Sharpsburg, Maryland. McClean's army fought well, but failed to worry the Confederates, and Lee's army fought bravely well. The Union won even though Lee managed to lead his army away. Though Lee managed to escape, it ended the invasion into Maryland. -
Battle of Fredricksburg
On Dec.11,1862, the Union led by Burnside battled against the Confederacy led by Lee at Fredricksburg, Virginia. Burnside tried to cross the river and reach Richmond, but was delayed and stopped by the Confederates. Lee's forces blocked the bridge, and clashed with the Union forces when they had crossed. The result was the Confederacy won, and the Union was driven away. -
Emancipation Proclamation
On Jan.1,1863, Lincoln proposed the Emancipation Proclamation in the Confederacy states. This document freed 3.1 million of 4 million slaves in the Confederate states. This didn't however, refer to the 4 slave states in the Union. It failed, and the issue of slavery wasn't changed or affected. -
Battle of Chancellorsville
The Battle of Chancellorsville on Apr. 30, 1863, marked the fierceset fighting, and the second bloodiest battle of the Civil War. Hooker's Union forces were repeadtly outsmarted by Lee's Confederacy forces. Lee saw through Hooker's strategies and easily crushed him. The Union retreated, and the Confederates won the battle. -
Siege of Vicksburg
Grant's Union forces clashed at Warren County, Mississippi with Pemberton's Confederate forces on May 18, 1863. The Union forces crossed the river and easily forced the Confederates to retreat. The Union was successful in their attack and emerged victourious. Independance Day wouldn't be celebrated because of the siege and Union victory. -
Battle of Gettysburg
On Jul.1, 1863, Meade's Union forces clashed with Lee's Confederate forces at Adams County, Pennslyvania. The result was the most casulities reported, and the turning point of the war. The Union managed to defend the attacks and win the battle. The Union victory ended Lee's invasion plans in the north. -
Siege of Atlanta
The siege of Atlanta took place on July 22, 1864, while during his campaign, Sherman's Union forces clashed with Hood's Confederate forces. The Union easily attacked and overwhelmed the Confederates as they guarded a city. The Union emerged victorious, and Sherman continued his movement. This proved to be big news for Lincoln to be reelected. -
Surrender at Appomattox Courthouse
The last battle took place on Apr. 9, 1865, when Lee surrendered to Grant at the Appomattox Courthouse in Virginia. Both sides fought until Lee realized he couldn't win. The surrender of Lee's forces ended the war in Virginia. This marked the end of the Civil War. -
Assassination of Abraham Lincoln
On April 14, 1865, while watching a play at Ford's Theatre in Washington D.C., Lincoln was shot and killed by Booth. Booth had hidden behind a curtain where Lincoln had been sitting, and shot him, hoping to rally the Confederates. Booth thought that by killing Lincoln, the Union would be shaking, and the Confederacy would win. But Lincoln's death only brought bad things for both sides. -
Ratification of 13th amendment
The 13th amendment was proposed than passed on Dec. 6, 1865. It was made to prohibit slavery except if by punishment for crime. It proved to be better than the Emancipation Proclamation, and did a better job. This amendment helped with the promise of freeing most of the slaves in the south states.
