  • Fort Sumter

    Fort Sumter
    The first "battle" in the civil war was fought in Charleston, South Carolina. No one was killed, but this attack on Fort Sumter was the beginning of the civil war. Thirty-four hours straight, the Confederates fired shells into the fort until Anderson surrendered. Lincoln was sending supply ships to Fort Sumter, but the Southern leaders wanted to prevent the federal government by attacking the fort before supplies arrived.

    In Manassas, Virginia, Union general McDowell and Confederate general Beauregard battled. The Confederacy won. The importance of this battle is that the North underestimated the South. This battle also led to the recognition of the Confederate army.

    the Battle of Hampton Roads took place in Hampton Roads, Virginia. The Northern general was Louis M. Goldsborough. The South general was Franklin Buchanan. The importance of the battle was that it was the first meeting of ironclad warships. the victory of this battle was undesicive. It started March 8, 1862, and ended March 9, 1862.

    In Pittsburg Landing, Tennesse, the armies struck each other again. The Confederate army was led by Grant and the Southern by Johnston. The union won this battle. But, Union lost 13,000 soiledrs, and the Confederate lost 11,000 soilders. Johnston was killed in this battle. The North gained control of the Tennessee River. The battle was April 6-7, 1862.

    Northern general Pope and Southern general Jackson had a battle in Manassas, Virginia. The Confederate army won and regained control of most of Virginia. This battle lasted August 29- August 30 1862.
  • Battle Of Antietam

    In Sharpsburg, Maryland, the Union and Confederate forces clashed yet again. Northern generalMcClelan and Southern general Robert E. Lee commanded their armies. The Union won. Lee's army retreated and McClellandid not follow. This caused McClellan to be relieved of duty.

    In Washington D.C, Maryland, Abraham Lincoln propsed the Emancipation Proclamation. This freed all slaves in the Confederate, or Southern, territory. The reason for this was because, freeing the Southern slaves weakend the Confederacy, so the Proclamation could be seen as a military action. The Constiotution didn't give President Lincoln the power to free slaves in the Union.

    The Battle Of Vicksburg started May 18, 1863 and ended july 4, 1863. It was in Vicksburg, Mississippi. The North general was Grant while the South general was Pemberton. This battle was considered a turning point because it gave Union power of the Mississippi River. It was a Union victory.

    The siege of Atlanta started on July 16 and ended September 2, 1864. The siege took place in Atlanta, Georgia, where the North captured Atlanta. The Southern general was Hood, and the Northern general was Sherman.This was a Union victory.

    This was the faithful day that Robert E. Lee surrendered to ulysses S. Grant. It was in Virginia at the Appomattox Courthouse. Grant was still on good terms after the surrender, feeding hungry soilders and letting them keep their possesions, such as horses. the result of the war is that approximatley 360,000 Union soilders died and 260,000 Confederate soilders died. 275,000 Union soilders wounded and 260,000 Confederate soilders were wounded. About 3,000,000 men served in the Horth and South.
  • Assasination Of Abraham Lincoln

    Assasination Of Abraham Lincoln
    At Ford's Theatre, in Washington D.C., Maryland, President Lincoln was watching a movie with his wife. John Wilkes Booth, a Confederate supporter, shot Lincoln in the back of the head on April 14, 1865. Abraham was quickly takien to the hospital, but the bullet in his brain could not be dislodged. On the morning of April 15, 1865, Abraham Lincoln died.

    This battle took place in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and was a bloddy battle. The Union leader was George Meade and the Confederate leader was Robert E. Lee. It was a Union victory. This battle marked the point the the South would never invade the North again. The battle lasted July 1-3, 1865. 75,000 Southern troops died and 90,000 Northern troops died.
  • Ratification of the 13th Amendment

    Ratification of the 13th Amendment
    On January 31, the 13th amendmet was passed by Congress. But it wasn't until December 6, 1865 when it was ratified.What was amazing is that 27 states, even eigh states in the South, had ratified the amendment. This amendment stated the slavery was banned in the United States of America. The amendmet also states in Section 2- " Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate Legislation."
