Fort Sumter
Fort Sumter was the first battle of the Civil War. This battle took place in South Carolina on the Charleston Harbor, and was important because it showed that war would occur between the north (Union) and south (Confederacy). -

The South,General Beauregard won this battle and Thomas J. Jackson won over his nickname stonewall Jackson from this battle. Lincoln decided to enlist an army and disbanded the militas. -

The battle of Hampton Roads was one of the most important naval battles of the civil war. This battle was the first meeting of Ironclad warships. This battle was a draw. -
Battle of Shiloh
This battle was a Union victory, and the Union received control of the Tennessee river. Grant lost 25% of the men fighting in the battle but Confederate losses were even greater. -
Battle of Bull Run (2nd)
This battle was a Confederate victory, and kept the Union from reaching Richmond. The Union retreated back to Maryland. -
Battle of Antietam
The battle of Antietam was the single bloodiest day in American history. The Union commander was George McClellan and the Confederate Commander was Robert E. Lee. Even thuogh the battle of Antietam was a Union victory George McClellan was fired as a result of not pursuing Lee back to Virginia. Also the Union victory may not have been possible if not for Confederate plans left at a vacant campsite that Union troops stopped at. This battle can be viewed as a draw since no land was exchanged. -
Battle of Fredericksburg
Lee won in the most one-sided battle of the civil war. The Union suffered large losses and ended it's campaign towards Richmond. -
Battle of Chancellorsville
This battle was Robert E. Lee's greatest victory but his prized general Thomas J. Jackson "Stonewall Jackson" died. This battle was the second bloodiest battle in the war. -
Battle of Gettysburg
This battle was a turning point in the war due to the fact that Confederacy never invaded the Union again and were always on the defense. Pickett's charge was a big reason for the Confederate defeat. Mead proved that he was an able general and could not be easily defeated. -
Siege of Vicksburg
This battle was a turning point in the war and gave the Union control of the Mississippi River. This battle greatly helped the Anaconda Plan succede. -
Siege of Atlanta
William Tecumseh Sherman helped influence the 1864 election and got Abraham Lincoln re-elected. He took Atlanta in September 1864 which also greatly helped the Anaconda Plan succeed. -
Emancipation Proclamation
The Emancipation Proclamation was important even though it had little effect on freeing slaves it was symbolic. For the North the Civil War was no longer a limited war whose main goal was to preserve the Union, but was to liberate slaves -
Ratification of the 13th ammendment
Freed all enslaved people in the United States. And banned slavery. -
Surrender at Appomattox Courthouse
Grant had pursued Lee until Lee knew that defeat was inevitable. Lee sent a message to Grant to tell he was ready to surrender. On April 9,1865 Lee, and Grant met in the small town of Appomattox Courthouse. Grant was generous with his terms of surrender and even gave food to the hungry Confederate soliders. -
Assassination of Abrham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln and his wife went to go see the play Our American Cousin at Ford's Theatre. John Wilkes Booth shot him in the back of the head then jumped over the railing elevan feet breaking his fibula. Though he managed to escape the theatre he was later tracked down and hung.
