South Carolina thought it was a trick so the commander at Fort Sumter Robert Anderson to surrender. Anderson agreed but only after he receives his supplies rejected his offer. This battle lasted for two days. The Civil War has begun. -
Battle of bull Run (1st)
bull runGeneral-in-Cheif Winfield Scott advanced on to the South before training his troops. Scott ordered General Irvin McDowell to attack Confederate troops stationed at Manassas Junction, Virginia. McDowell attacked on July 21, and was successful in the begining, but when more Confederate troops showed up it resulted in a Southern victory and a retreat toward Washington by federal troops. -
Battle of Hampton Roads
hampton roadsOn March 8 Confederate ironclad Virginia entered Hampton Roads where she sank Cumberland and ran Congress aground. On March 9, the Union ironclad Monitor fought with Virginia. The two ships fought each other to a standstill, but Virginia retired. The commanders were Lt. John Worden [US]; Capt. Franklin Buchanan and Lt. Catesby R. Jones [CS] -
Battle of Shiloh
ShilohOn April 6, Confederate forces head by General Ulysses S. Grant attacked Union forces the federal troops were almost defeated. During the night more soilders arrived, and by the next morning the Union commanded the field. When Confederate forces retreated the federal forces did not follow. Casualties were heavy in this bloody battle that lasted two days. -
Battle of Bull Run (2nd)
bull run2The Union combined General Pope and General McClellan after failing in the capture of Richmond. On August 29th Pope and his men was pushed back by the Confederates who was under the command of General Lee. General Jackson with his troops came from the East to attack General Pope from behind. Union troops turned to fight Jackson's troops. Lee and Longstreet's troops came to reinforce Jackson on the 30th Longstreet's troops forced the Union out of the field. The Union had lost. -
Battle of Antietam
anteintamThe Union army comanded by General McClellan attacked Lee’s Army at Sharpsburg, Maryland. September General Hooker’s Union corp assaulted Lee’s left flank and that was the begining of the Battle of Antietam, and the single bloodiest day in American military history. Union attacks, and Confederate counterattacks went back and forth the whole day. The Union fought harder and they won this battle which lasted three days. -
Battle of Fredricksburg
fredricksburgOn Nov 14 the commander of the Army of the Potomac, Burnside sent his troops to occupy Falmouth near Fredericksburg. Lee placed his men on the heights behind the town. On Dec 11, Union engineers laid five bridges. Dec 12th, the Federal army crossed over. on the 13, Burnside assaulted on Prospect Hill and Marye’s Heights. Confederate generals Thomas R.R. Cobb and Maxey Gregg were killed. On Dec 15, Burnside failed and Lincoln was disapointed and replaced him with Joseph Hooker. Confeds won! -
Emancipation Proclamation
Emansipation ProclamationOn Sep of 1862, after Anteitam, Lincoln issued a decree stating that, unless the rebellious states returned to the Union by January 1, freedom would be granted to slaves within those states. The decree also left room for a plan of compensated emancipation. No Confederate states took the offer. -

Siege of Vicksburg
VicksburgIn May and June of 1863 Gen. Grant’s armies arrived at Vicksburg, trapping a Confederate army under Gen. John Pemberton. On July 4, Vicksburg surrendered after many sieges. With the loss of Pemberton’s army and the Confederacy was split in half. Grant's successes in the West lead to his appointment as General-in-Chief of the Union armies. Union victory. -
Battle of Gettysburg
GettysburgOn July 1, Confederate forces marched on the town driving the Union back. On July 2, Lee attempted to close in on the Federals, first striking the Union's left flank and then attacking the Union right at Culp’s and East Cemetery Hills. By evening, the Federals retained Little Round Top. On Jul 3 the Confederates were bombared and on Jul 4 Lee began to withdraw. Union victory. -
Siege of Atlanta
AtlantaHood attacked Gen. McPherson’s Army of Tennessee. He withdrew his main army at night thinking Sherman would follow. He sent William Hardee with his corps on a march to hit the Union left and rear, east of the city.Hood messed up the time to make the march, and Hardee was unable to attack until afternoon. Gen. John A. Logan's Army counterattack that restored the Union line. The Union troops held and won. -

Assassination of Abraham Lincoln
assassintation of abeJohn Wilkes Booth entered the front of th Theatre around 10:07 P.M. entered the State Box where the Lincolns were sitting with Clara Harris and Major Henry Rathbone. Booth opened the door to the State Box, shot Lincoln in the back of the head at near point-blank range, and struggled with Rathbone. Booth stabbed Rathbone in the arm, jumped off onto the stage broke his leg and left.
