The Battle of Fort sumpter wqas fought April 12-13, 1861. It happened near Charleston, South Carolina. General Beauregard attacked Fort Sumpter and Lincoln called for volunteers. This was the first battle of the Civil War. -
Battle of Bull Run (1st)
The 1st Battle of Bull Run began on July 21, 1861. It took place near Manassa, Virginia. The Union leader was McDowell and the confederate leader was Beauregard. THe Confederacy won and for the first time both sides realized that the war would be longer and bloodier than expected. -
Battle of Hampton Roads
The Batttle of Hampton Roads began on March 8, 1862 and ended March 9. It was fought in Hampton Roads, Virginia. This battle was the first meeting in combat of Ironclad Warships. The battle ended indecisively. -
Battle of Shiloh
The Battle of Shiloh was fought from April 6, 1862 to April 7, 1862. It took place in southwestern Tennessee. General Grant led the Union and Generals Johnston and Beauregard led the Confederacy. The union won and ended Confederate hopes to prevent them from advancing into northern Mississippi. -
Battle of Bull Run (2nd)
The second battle of Bull Run started on August 28, 1862. It happened in the same place as the firsst, Manassas, Virginia, but it was bigger and bloodier. THe Union general was Pope and the Confederate general was Lee. It ended on August 30, 1862 in a Confederate victory and ended the Union threat in Virginia. -
Battle of Antietam
THe battle of Antietam began on September 17, 1862. It happened in Sharpsburg, Maryland. The Union general was McClellan and the Confederate general was Robert E. Lee. The battle ended on the 18th and theUnion won,but when the remainder of Lee's troops escaped, McClellan did not follow and Linclon fired him. -
Battle of Fredricksburg
The Battle of Fredricksburg started on December 11, 1862 and ended December 15, 1862. It was fought in and around Fredricksburg, Virginia. General Lee led the Confederate troops and General Ambrose E. Burnside led the Union. The Confederacy won when Burnside retreated on December 15, 1862. -
Emancipation Proclamation
President Abraham Licoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 11863. It freed 50,000 slaves. The total abolishement of slavery was finialized by the 13th amendment. -
Battle of Cancellorsville
The Battle of Cancellorsville started on April 30, 1863 and ended on May 6, 1863. It was fought near the village of Cancellorsville, Virginia. General Lee leed the Confederate army and General Hooker led the Union army. The battle ended in a Confederate victory and General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson was shot and killed. -
Siege of Vicksburg
The siege of Vicksburg happened May, 18 - July 4, 1863 in Vickburg, Mississippi. General Grant led the Union and General pemberton led the Confederacy. The confederacy surrendered and the Union took Vicksburg. -
Battle of Gettysburg
The Battle of Gettysburg began on July 1, 1863 and ended on July 3, 1863. It was fought near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. General Lee led the Confederate army and General Meade led the Union. It ended in a Union victory and from then on the Confederacy would never invade the Union again. -
Siege of Atlanta
The Siege of Atlanta happened on July 22, 1864. It took place southwest of Atlanta, Georgia. The Union forces were led by General sherman and the Confederate forces defending Atlanta were led by General Hood. Th Union won and took Atlanta and the north was very happy and Lincoln was reelected. -
The Surrender at Appomattox Courthouse
The surrender at Appomattox Courthouse happened April 9, 1865 at the Appomattox courthouse in Virginia. It was the last battle between the Union troops, led by General Grant, and the Confederate troops, led by General Lee. On April 12, 1865 the Confederacy officially surrendered and the Civil War was over. -
Assassination of Abraham Lincoln
President Lincoln was assassinated on April 14,1865. He was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth as an attempt to get the confederate troops to keep fighting. He was shot while watching a play with his wife Mary Todd Lincoln. Lincoln did not actually die until the next morning. -
Ratification of the 13th Amendment.
The 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was adopted on December 6, 1865. It claimed that all slaves were free and that slavery was illegal.
