This battle was fought on water, and it was the first time they started fighting with ironclads. The outcome was ininconclusive. -

This was a union victory and an important outcome was that Johnston was killed and the union got control of the Mississippi river. -

On the morning of September 17, 1862, Union and Confederate troops clashed near Maryland's Antietam Creek. The battle of antietam was the bloodiest one-day battle in American history. By the time the sun went down that day, there were almost 4,000 soilders dead. -

In 1863, Abraham Lincoln declared that all slaves were free in territory, in rebellion against the federal government. It actually freed few people because it did not affect slaves in border states, or slaves in southern areas under union control. -

The leader of the union forces was General Joseph Hooker, and the leader og the confederates was General Robert E. Lee. THis was a confederate victory, and Lee beat and army that outnumbered him 2:1, but Jackson was killer. -

The siege of Vicksburg began on May 18, 1863 nd lasted until July 4, 1863. This battle took place in Mississippi. The union troops were led by Grant, and the confederate troops were led by Pmberten. This battle resulted in a union victory and gave them control of the mississippi river, and the goal in the west was accomplished. -

The battle of Gettysburg took place on July 1, 1863 and lasted until July 3, 1863. This battle took place in Pennsylavnia. This battle was a union victory, and the importance was that 43,000 casualties South never invaded the North again. -
Siege of Atlanta
The Siege of Atlanta began on July 16, 1864, and lasted until Sepember 2, 1864. This battle took place in Georgia. The union troops were led by Sherman, and the confederate troops were led by Hood. This battle resulted in the Union capturing "the heart of the south." -
Surrender at Appomattox Courthouse
The surrender at Appomattox courthouse led to the end of the civil war. This was when the confederate troops surrendered to the union troops. -
Assissination of Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln was shot at Ford's Theatre on April 14, 1865, by John Wilkes Booth. The bullet had entered through Lincolns left ear, and behind his right eye. After nine hours of medical effort, Lincoln died on April 15, 1865 at 7:22 AM. -
Ratification of the 13th amendment
The 13th amendment declared that slavery be abolished. It was passed on January 31, 1865, and passed on December 6, 1865.
