Fort Sumter
The Confederat leander, General Beauregard, lead his men to fight the Union leader, Commander Anderson, and his men in a battle located in Charleston, South Carolina. The Confederates forced the Union to surrender, allowing Beauregard and his men to win the battle. The battle at Fort Sumter was the first battle of the Civil War. This is the battle that officially started the Civil War. -
Battle of Hampton Roads
Confederates met the Union in Virginia at Hampton Roads near Norfolk. John Worden, Confederate leader, defeated the Union, lead by Franklin Buchanan. The deaths of the Union soldiers was a lot more than Confederate soldiers. The two ships fought each other at a standstill untill Confederates took the win. -
Battle of Shiloh
Confederate General Johnston attacked the Union at Pittsburg Landing. The general of the Union, General Grant, and his men were able to protect themselves from the attack. The battle lasted for two days. The Union won the battle. -
First Battle of Bull Run
General McDowell lead his 28,000 Union soldiers to fight the Confederate commander, General Beauregard, and his 33,000 soldiers. The battle was supposed to take place in Richmond but they met up at a Southern base in Manassas and fought their battle there. During the first five hours of the battle the Union was forcing the Confederates to retreat. But Confederate reinforcements showed up and the Union soldiers retreated back to Washington, allowing the Confederates to win the battle. -
Second Battle of Bull Run
Unlike the First Battle of Bull Run, the Union started with more soldiers than the Confederates had. The Confederates were out numbered 62,000 to 50,000. After the Union defeat at First Battle of Bull Run, they decided to combine the armies of General McClellan and General Pope. However Confederate generals, General Jackson and General Lee, also decided to combine their armies. The Union was defeated once again and retreated back to Washington. -
Battle of Antietam
The Battle of Antietam was between the Union general, General McClellan, and his soldiers and the Confederate general, General Lee, and his soldiers. The result of the battle was a Union victory, forcing the Confederates to retreat back across the Patomic River. -
Battle of Fredricksburg
General Ambrose E. Burnside lean the Union troops from the Potomac River to a vicinity near Fredricksburg. General Lee took his Confederate troops behind the vicinity. When the Union arrived the Confederates destroyed the Union. Leading to another Confederate victory. -
Emancipation Proclamation
The Emancipation Proclamation was issued by the president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. It came into play during the third year of the civil war. It declared "that all persons held as slaves are, and henceforward shall be free." But the only slaves that the proclamation was talking about, were the slaves within the rebellious states. -
Battle of Chancelorsville
General Joseph Hooker lead Union troops to Chancelorsville to attack and get rid of General Lee's Confederate troops at the left flank. But the Confederates were well prepared. They were ablt to defend themselves and have another Confederate victory. -
Siege of Vicksburg
The Siege of Vicksburg was an important battle in the war. Union General Grant commanded his soldiers to an attack on Vicksburg at the Confederate General Pembertonand his men. The battle resulted in a Union victory! The most important thing about the battle was that it split the Confederates in half. -
Battle of Gettysburg
General Meade lead Union troops to attack General Lee and his Confederate troops in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The new General Meade defeated Lee at Gettysburg which was the most important battle of the Civil War. The battle also lead to the Gettysburg Adress. -
Siege of Atlanta
The Union was commanded by General Sherman to take Atlanta, Georgia from General Hood and his Confederate troops. Atlanta was a good supply and rail area and was important to both sides. The Union supprised the Confederates as they snuck up on them. Hood and his troops retreated from Atlanta, allowing the Union to take it over. -
Surrender at Appomattox Courthouse
Lee and his men were surrounded. He had nothing to do but surrender. He decided to go to General Grant himself and tell him he won the war. And that what he did. -
Assassination of Abraham Lincoln
John Wilks Booth was a southerner that was completely against everything that Lincoln did. He blamed Lincoln for all of the illnesses in the South. So he made a plan to kill Lincoln. He snuck into a theatre and shot him, and the president died. -
Ratification of the 13th Amendment
After the war, the 13th Amendment was ratified. It ended the institution of slavery. Southerners didn't like this Amendment but since the north won the war it was able to be put into play.
