Fort Sumter

Apr 12, 1861

On April 12, 1861 in Charleston, South Carolina, Beauregard commanded the surrender of Fort Sumter, Robert Anderson refused, on April 12, Beauregard attacked the fort, the next day Anderson gave the fort up. This was the first battle of the Civil War.

First Battle of Bull Run

Jul 21, 1861

General McDowell commanded 28,000 union soliders to attack general Beauregard at Richmond but met at Manassas. at first the union were beating the confederates, but Thomas Jackson stood his ground until reinforcements came, which caused the union to retreat earning the confederates a victory.

Battle of Hampton Roads

Mar 8, 1862

In Hampton Roads, Virginia, Lt. John Worden and Lt. Catesby R. Jones. The Confederate ironclad Virginia ran into Hampton Roads and sunk Cumberland. The Union ironclad fought untill there was a standstill. There was no victory for either side. The battle ended on March 9, 1862.

Battle of Shiloh

Apr 6, 1862

In Hardin County, Tennessee, Union commander Ulysess S. Grant and Robert E. Lee fought untill the Confederates retreated. it was a Union victory and gave control of the Tennessee river to the Union. Johnston was killed. The battle ended the 7th.

Second Battle of Bull Run

Aug 28, 1862

In Manassas, Virginia, Union general John Pope and Confederate general Robert E. Lee, had a two day battle exactly like the 1st Bull Run, the confederates won, while the union retreated to Centreville. The battle ended on August 30, 1862.

Battle of Antietam

Sep 17, 1862

This battle was in Maryland. The north's was McClellan. The souths' general was Lee. It was a military draw.This battle was seen as a politican vistory for the union. This battle led to the emancipation proclimation.

Battle of Fredricksburg

Dec 11, 1862

In Fredricksburg, Virginia, Union General Burnside faught against Confederate General Robert E. Lee. The Confederates won on December 15, when Burnside retreated across the river.

Emancipation Proclamation

Jan 1, 1863

Abraham Lincoln issued this document on the 3rd year of the Civil War, It stated that "all persons held as slaves" within the confederate states "are, and henceforward shall be free." It only affected the confederate states.

Battle of Chancellorsville

Apr 27, 1863

On April, 27th, Hooker led his troops on Lee's army at Spotsyleania County, Virginia. The battle ended May 6, 1863. It was a Confederate Victory.This was Lee's greatest victory.

Siege of Vicksburg

May 18, 1863

This battle started on May 18th and ended on July 4th. In Mississippi. Genral Grant for the Union and Genral Pemberton For the Confederace. The Union won. It gave the Union controll of the mississippi river.

Battle of Gettysburg

Jul 1, 1863

This battle lasted three days. July 1-july 3, in Pennstlvania. Genral Meade lead the Union to victory. The genral for the south was Lee. This battle forced the confederates to withdraw from tennessee. This was the turning point of the war.

Siege of Atlanta

Jul 16, 1864

It started in July 16th and ended on September 2nd 1865. This battle was in Georgia. The genral for the Union was Sherman and the genral for the confederace was Hood. The Union won.

Surrender at Appomatox Courthouse

Apr 9, 1865

Genral Lee surrendered to Genral Ulysses S. Grant.The surrender was the first time the two genrals had seen each other face to face in almost two decades.

Assanination of Abraham Lincoln

Apr 14, 1865

Lincoln was shot at Ford Theater by JohnWilkes Booth. Lincoln was killed at 10:15pm.

Ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment

Dec 6, 1865

When the thirteenth amendment was ratified slavery was officially put to an end. The ratification was eight months after the war.
