Gadsden Purchase 1853
Acquired land where the southern transcontinental railroad was established and is the parts of New Mexico and Arizona which used to be a part of Mexico. Helped establish parts of todays border with the US and Mexico.

The Kansas Nebraska Act 1854
This allowed the new territories of Kansas and Nebraska to decide on slavery. Madness erupted in Kansas as people rushed to claim it and didn't become free until 1861. As blood was shed the people against slavery were led by John Brown.

James Buchanan 1857
James Buchanan is inaugurated as president and is seeking to keep peace between the North, against slavery, and the South, pro-slavery. People believe he is favoriting the South as he was constantly making the North angry especially with the Dred Scott decision after it was handed to him 2 days after he was put in office.

Dred Scott vs Sanford 1857
Dred Scott is in a constant battle for Freedom and eventually loses his freedom in 1857 after a number of appeals and trials. Dred Scott's owner then marries an abolitionist who ends up freeing Scott in 1857 as well.

Lincoln - Douglas Debates 1858
Lincoln and Douglas come to debate in Illinois at 7 varied locations. Lincoln argues that a house divided cannot stand and was for the argument that African Americans deserved to have the unalienable rights stated in the Declaration of Independence. Although Lincoln was defeated these debates brought Lincoln to prominence.

John Browns Raid on Harpers Ferry 1859
John Brown, an abolitionist, leads men to Harpers Ferry to capture the federal armory and arsenal. This didn't turn out well as many of his men were killed by U.S. Marines of the South under Robert E. Lee. John Brown was captured and then killed for his crimes on December 2, 1859.

Secession
Southern states severed their ties and compromises with the Union. This created hostilities.

Emancipation Proclamation
Abraham Lincoln, who was the president at the time, declared all slaves to be freed in 11 southern states. This was the third war of the Civil War.

Abraham Lincoln delivered the speech called the Gettysburg Address during the Civil War in Pennsylvania. This was a speech to address the purpose of the U.S. and to try to bring the country together.

Reconstruction Era began
After the Civil War, the Reconstruction Era was the effort to reintegrate Southern states from confederacy and end slavery. Millions of slaves were freed and effort was made to integrate them into society.

Civil Rights Act of 1866 was passed
The Civil Rights Act was passed by congress over Johnson's veto. The Civil Rights Act of 1866 declared that all people born in the US had citizenship regardless of race, previous conditions, ect.

In Augusta, Georgia the first Sunday School for blacks was organized.

Session of Georgia General Assembly
The 1870 session of Georgia General Assembly convened in the Kimball Opera House (which served as Georgia’s state capitol from 1869-1889). Black legislators who had been expelled were reseated (by an act of the U.S. Congress).

15th Amendment
On Feb. 2, 1870, the General Assembly ratified the Fifteenth Amendment; on July 15 President Ulysses Grant signed an act restoring Georgia’s representation in Congress.
