The Underground Railroad was a network of people that would help slaves escape to freedom. Harriet Tubman was one of the most famous conductors, people who led the slaves to the safehouses, she led about 13 missions to rescue enslaved people. -

An abolitionist named John Brown led a raid against a federal armory in Harpers Ferry. He wanted to start a revolt with the slaves. -

There were four people running for president, they were Abraham Lincoln, Stephen Douglas, John Breckinridge, and John Bell. Abraham Lincoln won and became the 16th president. -

Slave States started to leave the United States after Abraham Lincoln was elected. They formed the Confederate States of America and elected Jefferson Davis as president. -
Fort Sumter
The Confederacy attacked Fort Sumter and the fort surrendered. It started the Civil War. Fort Sumter was under Union control and was surrounded by the South. Lincoln sent supplies to Fort Sumter and the South attacked. -

The Civil War started after Confederate troops attacked Fort Sumter in South Carolina. Fort Sumter was under Union control before then. -

The Northern and Southern forces met and fought. Many civilians came to watch the battle as they thought it would be the last. As the battle continued people realized that the war wouldn't be easily. -

Jefferson Davis was elected as the president of the Confederate States of America. -

The Emancipation Proclamation was issued by Abraham Lincoln. It declared that all slaves in the Confederacy were free. -
Gettysburg Battle
Union and Confederate forces met by the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Robert E. Lee wanted to invade the North and end the war. It was the turning point of the war because Britain and France wouldn't help the South afterwards. The battle resulted the most casualties of the whole war. -
Sherman's March to the Sea
Union General William T. Sherman led Sherman's March to the Sea. It was the last part of the Anaconda Plan. He and his soldiers marched down the South and stole food, livestock, and burned houses of the people there. -
Battle of Appomattox Courthouse
Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant's forces fought for a week in Virginia before Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Courthouse. -
Abraham Lincoln's Assassination
John Wilkes Booth assassinated President Abraham Lincoln . Lincoln was shot in the head and he died the next day. -
13th Amendment
The 13th Amendment abolished slavery in the U.S. -
14th Amendment
The 14th Amendment gave all the rights in the Bill of Rights to formerly enslaved people. -
15th Amendment
The 15th Amendment gave African American men the vote.
