    Compromise of 1850
    The compromise of 1850 was supposed to settle the arguments between slave states and free states. That did not really work out so it is a part of why the Civil War started.

    The Fugitive Slave Act was a federal law that allowed for the capturing and returning of runaway slaves within the Unites State. This law led to alot of critisism and some states actually nulified the law and bypassed it.
  • Underground Railroad

    Underground Railroad
    The underground railroad was a network of secret routes and safe houses that helped run away slavs escape. Thi caused the Civil War because people in the North would let slaves that escaped in there homes and refuseed to tell the slave owners they didn't. That led to problems.

    Uncle Tom's Cabin
    This was a book written by Harriet Breacher Stowe which showed that slavery was more than a political message, a moral evil. The book started a bunch of controversy between the North and South.
    It stirred up a huge argument between North and South and it then led to the Civil War.

    The Whig party splits into the North and South. The southern whigs were pro slavery and pro union and the North were opposed to the fugitive slave act.

    Kansas/ Nebraska Act
    The Kansas - Nebraska act opened up land for settlement and it dealt with the problems of slavery and it allowed Kansas and Nebraska to have slaves. The problem was setttlers wanted to go there but they couldn't because this act made it so the could not legally hold a claim on land. There was then a conflict between north and south.

    Bleeding Kansas involdved a lot of violent series of events of anti- slavery, free staters and pro slavery. The Northerners were very furious because of Bleeding Kansas. The actions included death, kidnapping and burning of buildings. Most important reaso the Civil War was fought.

    Dred Scott was a slave who lived in Illinois as a free slave. He thought he should be free so he sued the federal court for his freedom and then he appealed to the supreme court. This ledto the Civil War because it started alot of problems between the North and the South.

    This is where John Brown led 21 men, black and white into Harpers Ferry Virginia. This is where they killed and held as many citizens hostage. John Brown was then captured and charged with treason,then sent to death.

    Lincoln won the election of 1860. He had suport from both the North and the South. The Democrat party split into three groups along the regional lines and Lincoln winning the election le the south o succession.
