  • Start of the War

    After the South left the Union ,because of the election of Lincoln. They attacked the Union - held of Fort Sumter. The capture of this fort lead to the start of the Civil War.
  • Battle of Bull Run (Manassas)

    Plan was to take the rebel capitol of Richmond. Fighting breaks out in a little creak called Bull Run. The Confederate win this War. This forces Lincoln to take the South seriously and he gets a "real" Army.
  • Battle of Antietam

    The Union forces went attacked at Antietam Creek. They fought all day and no one gained ground by nightfall. Lee withdraw into Virginia. This is the bloodiest day in all of American history.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    This order freed all slaves in states in the Confederacy and the Constitution allowed it as a military action.
  • Formation of the 54th of Massachusetts

    Most famous black fighting force formed.

    Battle of Vicksburg

    Grant settled for a long siege for surrender. He surrounded the city and didn't let anything go in or out. The Confederates ate anything to survive. After a month and a half they surrendered. The Union now controlled the Mississippi.

    Battle of Gettysburg

    A 3 day war that started because Robert E. Lee told his troops to go get shoes. Both side called reinforcements and the battle was fought on rocky hills and fields. The Union won and Lee's army was never as good as they used to be.
  • Gettysburg Address

    Lincoln went to Gettysburg to speak at a dedication ceremony for 3,500 who are buried there. This speech was one of the most famous speeches of all time. It was 2 minutes long.
  • Sherman's March to the sea.

    General William Tecumseh Sherman will walk to the South. He destroyed everything that he saw in the South not just the people.
  • 13th Amendment

    The 13th amendment abolished slavery, made slavery illegal, ended the fugitive slave act and the 3/5 compromise.
  • Freedman's Bureau

    A government organization that helped freed slaves. They looked for family members, helped educate.
  • Lee's surrender

    Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House, Virginia. Grant let Lee go home without any consequences if he would just go home and stop fighting. This developed hard feelings in the North and South.
  • Assassination of Abraham Lincoln

    Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth at Ford's Theater. Lincoln dies the next day in a house across the street.
  • End of Recontruction

    Rutherford B Hayes was elected president. He withdrew the last federal troops. Ended Reconstruction
  • 14th Amendment

    All people born in the U.S. were citizens and had the same rights. Blacks can vote.
  • 15th Amendment

    Citizens can't be stopped from "voting on account of race or color."
  • Supreme Court Case Plessy vs. Ferguson

    Plessy goes to court. Court ruled segregation was not against the constitution. Separate ,but equal.
