Compromise of 1850
The compromise pleased both the North and the South. It kept the balance in congress and kept the South from secession. It also provided popular sovereignty. -
Dred Scott Case
Supreme Court ruled a slave has no rights and was not a citizen, therefore he could not sue. As a slave Scott is property. The ruling elongated the longevity of slavery. -
Lincoln Becomes President
Lincoln promised to stop the spread of slavery and the South saw him as an enemy. Lincoln won with no southern votes. -
Southern Secession
The Confederate States of America or Confederacy was established with Jefferson Davis as president. The North wouldnt let them leave without a fight. -
Fort Sumter
This was the start of the Civil War. The South fired on Fort Sumter and destroyed it easily. North was united after hearing of this and many volunteered to fight the South. -
Bull Run
First major battle of the Civil War. CSA won and the North realized the South was gonna fight hard. -
Battle of Antietam
It was a draw but Lincoln considered it a win and he released the Emancipation Proclamation which freed all slaves. -
Battle of Vicksburg
Vicksburg was destroyed by numerous cannon bombardments. Union knew it was a matter of time until the war was won. -
Battle of Gettysburg
The Union figured out that Robert Lee could be defeated. It was a crush Lee lost more than a third of his army. -
Lincoln's Assassination
John Wilkes Booth shoots Lincoln in the back of the head in a theater. -
Battle of Appomattox Court House
Lee surrenders. Asks that his men may keep their pistols and horses which is accepted. -
13th Amendment
The 13th Amendment abolishes slavery. -
14th Amendment
All people born in America have citizenship. This protects blacks under the Constitution. -
Ulysses S. Grant Elected President
Grant cracked down on KKK and ratified the 15th Amendment. -
15th Amendment
Blacks allowed right to vote. Gives North more votes which hurts the South
