  • Start of the war

    After seceding from the Union due to Lincolns election, Confederates fired on and captured the union held Fort Sumter in South Carolina. This event triggered the start of the war.
  • First Battle of Bull run

    Lincoln ordered an invasion of Virginia In the summer of 1861. Union forces clashed with confederate soldiers. Fighting breaks out by a little creek called Bull Run. North is shocked because they didn't do to well and they realise that South is serious.
  • Battle of Antietam

    The Union forces went on the attack at Antietam Creek. Led by General McClellan they will clash with Lee's Army. They will fight all day and Lee ended up being forced to withdraw into Virginia. The result was the single bloodiest day in all of American history.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    Many people were encouraging Lincoln to free the slaves. Summer of 1862, the war was taking a toll on the United states. E.P. freed all slaves in states rebellion the confederacy. Constitution allowed it as a military action.
  • Formation of the 54th Mass.

    It was most famous of the all black regiments. On July 1863, there were attacks at fort Wagner in South Carolina.
  • Battle of Gettysburg

    Lee hoped for victory in the North. It was rumoured there was a supply of shoes so they were headed that way. Lee's troops ran into the Union troops. The battle was on for 3 days on rocky hills and fields. The Union won.
  • Defeat of Vicksburg

    Vicksburg was the last stronghold of the Confederates on the river. Grant had failed at his direct attacks so he settled in for a long siege for surrender. He surrendered the city and prevented anything from going in or out. The ''rebels'' had to eat anything to survive without food. After a month and a half they surrendered.
  • New York City draft riots

    This was the week of drafting. The government had men be apart of war by drafting them to fight
  • Gettysburg Address

    President Abraham Lincoln went to Gettysburg to speak at a cemetery in honor of the men that served and died. There were 3,500 men buried there. Lincoln's speech was only less than 2 minutes, but it was a famous one. What is he said was very important for people to hear. "all men are created equal" was most remembered. He could not let those that died be for nothing.
  • Sherman's March to Sea

    Sherman was going to go through the South. Sherman had a war he did that was called 'Sherman's Total War.' The war did not only destroy the enemies but anything that supported it. his troops tore up the railroads that was in the South, destroyed the crops, and burned and looted towns. He and his troops went form Atlanta to the Sea cutting a path
  • Creation of Freedman's Bureau

    President Abraham Lincoln created the Freedman's Bureau tohelp former slaves. sadly Lincoln was murdered and didn't get ot finish his term in office, so his vise president became president. Now, president Johnson was a fomer slave owner and he was stubborn and unyielding. He believed the President and not th econgress was responsible for Reconstruction. He pushed the passing of the 13th Amendement in Southern States.
  • Assassination of Lincoln

    Abraham Lincoln had went to a theatre with his wife and others to watch a performance. A well known famous actor had snuck up to where he was sitting and shot him. Later that night Lincoln was dead and the actor got away. Eventually the killer was found at a barn that was burning to block him and he died from a gunshot wound.
  • Congress Passes the 13th Amendment

    The 13th Amendment was a law that would end slavery. It abolished slavery, prohibited involuntary servitude, and nullified the Fugitive Slave Act and the 3/5 Compromise.
  • surrender at Appomattox Courthouse

    Grant was chasing Lee and took Richmond. Lee wanted to keep fighting but he knew he was going to lose in the end.He sends a message saying that he's ready to surrender. Lee and Grant met in Virginia in a town and Lee surrenders. The owner actually had the war start in his yard of his old house and now its in ending in his new house.
  • 14th Amendment

    Congress wanted to change the Constitution. They made the 14th Amendment that stated all people born in the U.S. were citizens & had the same rights. If any state kept blacks from voting, they would lose representatives in Congress.
  • 15th Amendment

    Congress proposes and gets approved the 15th Amendment. citizens can not be stopped from "voting on account of race or color." There will now be black representatives
  • End of Reconstruction

    Rutherford B Hayes was elected President. he withdrew the last federal troops from the South. it was the end of Reconstruction and the Republican's fight for racial equality. In the 1950s the Civil Rights Movement started.
  • Supreme court Case Plessy vs Ferguson

    Segregation is challenged in the Supreme Court. Court ruled that segregation was not against the constitution. The society had to be seprate but equal. It would not be overturned until Brown vs Board of Education
